Hey - lately I've been kicked off after as little as 30 sec of
inactivity. This was happening on a wireless connection,
so I attributed it to that; but now it's happening off a
cable modem. Why is this happening, and is anyone else
    having this difficulty?

I have the same problem sporadically. And I rarely use a wireless connection, so that's not it.

If you are not checking the "Stay Logged In" box on the login form clicking that should keep you logged in.

But I don't necessarily want to stay logged in all the time. I sometimes log in from a shared computer at a hot desk at my office (e.g. while participating in a teleconference). It's annoying when I log in and 2 minutes later try to reply to something to find that I'm not logged in.

We're talking, yeah, 2 minutes, that sort of time frame. Even less sometimes.
I'll go to the bathroom, and , kapowie, logged out.

We're not talking session to session (when I don't want to stay logged in).

Oh, yeah, you can take that [answered] flag off until the issue
    is answered.

It sounds like the computers you are using are either using a proxy that gives a different IP address frequently for requests or are using a connection that changes its ip address at a fairly often interval for some reason. This triggers your session to be invalidated (otherwise the session would last for an hour of inactivity) when lot logged in with "Stay Logged In".

If you have a way to stabilize the IP address that requests come from in the cases you have described being logged out that should take care of the problem as you describe. If that is not possible here are a few other options you could try out as well:
    1. Log in via "Stay Logged In" and remember to log out when done.
    2. Open a browser window in "Privacy" or "Incognito" mode and select "Stay Logged In" and when the browser window is closed the cookies will be lost.

    Thanks for that.
