I've managed to become confused again, and looking for some help. I'm traveling on a reward:

    SFO-FRA-MAD
    MAD-FRA-EWR (Stopover)
    EWR-SFO

I want to change my last flight to come home from DTW-SFO. Is that a valid open jaw? If not, can I change my return to EWR-DTW and terminate there? Thanks in advance.

Terminating in DTW is definitely valid.

I believe that adding the EWR-DTW open jaw should be as well.

Following up: I called CO and the agent told me that DTW-SFO at the end of the trip was not a valid open-jaw, but that I could do EWR-DTW, as you said, and find my own way back from DTW to SFO. So it'll cost me a few more dollars or miles, but not a terrible outcome, even if not ideal.
