I hope no one is seriously injured, but this sounds really bad.

Having spent 5 years working on building a cathedral, this hits close to home.

I have just fixed the first link (apologies) which states:
New Zealand police say there are reports of multiple fatalities in Christchurch after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck today, bringing buildings down on to two buses and trapping people in buildings, five months after the city was badly damaged by a 7.1 magnitude quake.
"Multiple fatalities have been reported at several locations in the central city, including two buses crushed by falling buildings. A doctor and emergency services are attending," police said in a statement.

My wife was in CHC a week after the September quake. I just alerted her to the news.

While weaker than the September quake this strong aftershock was felt more strongly in Christchurch due to being right under the city and very shallow. There have been multiple aftershocks above magnitude 5 today. Some fatilities are confirmed, but no numbers as yet.

Phone systems are overloaded in Christchurch in particular but also heavily loaded nationally.

Fortunately my close relations in the area are all okay. It may be a while before I hear from all my friends based there. Comms are a mess and really there are bigger priorities than contacting people who live elsewhere.

NZ has $50 fares from anywhere in NZ to CHC for tomorrow & Thursday. Also operating a 747 between AKL & CHC tomorrow.

Do they really need dozens of people going down there right now? They need to be getting everyone out!

Agree, but sounds like they are bringing in extra search & rescue, medical and related staff. I guess the flights out will be taking sick and elderly to other areas to stay.

Okay. But as the CHC mayor said - while volunteers are extremely welcome, it needs to be coordinated. Uncoordinated volunteers can cause more harm than good, so I hope there will be no mad rush to get to CHC to try and help when it may actually make things worse.

Take a page from the QLD floods and they’ll have great success helping each other out!

The other part of this is you do not want too many extras there using up the few valuable resources that you have available.
The NZ and Oz PM's talked and as a result the Oz government has sent in 75 Search & Rescue personnel.

I also heard some passing comment that there are 100 "engineers" from Singapore either in CHC or en route to assist, but don't know who/what/where/why etc

May have been a conference? Apparently there are 200 aussie urologists in Chch who've offered to help.

They really do have conferences for everything, don't they! Awesome that so many are willing to help in any way they can.

Considering people have been crushed by debris, having that many specialists in that field could be very beneficial.
