Our hotel Category adjustments for 2014 will soon be in effect, and we would like to provide you with an advance look at the preliminary list of changes. Please note that we are not adding new categories or changing category pricing.
Just over 20% of hotels are changing category, of these 56% are moving down and 44% are moving up. We want to make sure you’re able to maximize your Starpoints®, so please review the information to decide if it makes sense to redeem before or after the changes take place starting March 4, 2014. Please note that Category changes are always subject to change, and while we make every attempt to provide you the latest, most accurate information, there may be adjustments necessary before or after the March 4, 2014 date.

Click here to view the list of changes.

Click here to view existing hotel categories.

When you’re ready to book, visit spg.com or contact one of our Customer Contact Centers.

I do appreciate that these changes are posted here. Perhaps the "The sky is falling" posts can be kept to a minimum.

Overall, not nearly as bad as recent years. Although the jumps to Cat 6 make those properties non-starters for redemption.

Looks like perhaps that rapid expansion into China may not be panning out too well.

I guess that's becoming a common trend among all the hotel programs. I just wonder what's the decision is based on? The popular hotels are moving up and those no one wants to stay at are going down?

Hasn't it been like this for a while?

On Lucky's blog, he's got a post that goes into that.

If the hotels are popular, wouldn't people be willing to spend more points on them? Conversely, if they lower the amount of points required for a less popular hotel, they may be able to get more people to stay there by doing that.

For SPG, Categories are assigned (allegedly) based upon average daily revenue from the preceding year.

Well we do have to say, that the economy has improved, so hotel occupancy, overall room spend in certain places has improved. Hence category changes.

With SPG, economy improves = incremental devaluation.

I was speaking for the overall industry not just SPG. 2001 to mid 2006, the travel sector was in the toilet. People were afraid to fly. Hotels were giving away status to fill rooms. When SPG and other hotel loyalty programs introduced double stay credits, were we complaining? When there was a new promo, that was pro customer, were we complaining? When categories didn't change for a few years, were we complaining about "devaluation"?

For instance, man properties were dirt cheap, in 2002-2006. I remember staying at beach properties for less than $100 a night. I can remember staying at properties in LA, San Fran, San Diego, Chicago, DC, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, S. Florida, Tampa for next to nothing. Now the economy has improved in various places, new hotels built, many hotels have undergone renovation and new loyalty programs introduced, like Klimpton.

I want to make sure we look at both sides of the coin and the big picture, instead of just saying, "category changed, i'm being devalued".

Correction: They are based on projected ADR for this year.

And the projections are, presumably, based at least in part on last year's ADR.

Not that I am personally aware of. Besides, we are inching into an area of information that is proprietary. :)

Sorry. Not trying to sell anything. The only criteria I am personally aware of is future ADR. There may indeed be others, including a peak back at last year's ADR, but I am not privy to anything definitive other than future ADR and that is all that SPG has publicly owned up to, so the rest is proprietary.

    Better now?

Hard time? Please. He "corrected" me. And, IMO (and that "O" is for "opinion", which I believe is still allowed on this board), it is simply argumentative and 100% unbelievable to claim that future ADR is not based upon past ADR. Whether anyone has personal or propietary knowledge. Standard SPG semantics/splitting hairs games. YMMV.

Big picture is that 2001-2006 are irrelevant. When points sitting in your account become worth less over night, that is by definition devaluation. The only question is how much of a devaluation.

We wanted to let you that there were some re-calculations with regard to three properties and the list provided in the first posting has been updated to reflect this.

So no one has to labor over comparing the new list to the one that was provided before, here are the changes that were made most recently:

Hotel Bristol Odessa - Category 4 to Category 5 (had been listed as no change; now going up from 2013)

Westin Resort & Spa Puerto Vallarta - Category 2 to Category 3 (had been listed as going down; now no change from 2013)

St. Regis Osaka - Category 6 to Category 5 (had been listed as no change; now going down from 2013)

Thank you for your patience during the category change process.
