Nothing like a good breach of accounts to trigger a change in the way security is handled. In the case of ANA it was north of one million Mileage Club points redeemed fraudulently for iTunes gift cards earlier this year which seems to have engendered the new policy of expiring PINs as a web account security measure and now requiring passwords instead. And passwords are definitely harder to brute-force hack which makes this new policy a good thing for ANA Mileage Club members.

Where it becomes a bit challenging, however, is when there are other systems built around using that PIN as part of your credentials, plus the part where if you’ve already set a password the PIN is no longer valid. Oops.

So, if you’re using the Star Alliance Award Alerts tool and you’ve changed from a PIN to a Password those searches aren’t running correctly right now. To address that you’ll need to update your credentials on the site:

Of course, first you need to reset it on the ANA site.

And, as noted on the ANA schedule, this isn’t critical for a couple months yet but no sense in waiting around. So, if you’re one of the many people using the ANA Award Alerts please update your credentials.

And, if you’re not one of those people, give it a look. Free award alerts is nice.
