Wanted to spend few days in Belgium before we start our trip to Italy. Tried to book 2 seats on business in 3rd week of September from JFK-BRU, the total fuel and other taxes are $ 895.00 p.p. I could not find any award availability from LAX. to Italy. If I add additional $350 p.p. LAX-JFK round trip in eco. class + train or flight from BRU to VCE or any other city in Italy, I will pay very close to paid business class seats rather than using my 136000 points. Need help and suggestions please.

    Just to clarify.

    Home Airport: LAX

    Desired Destiniation: VCE

    Stopover: BRU

You want 2 business class tickets LAX-BRU-VCE-BRU-LAX departing any day the 3rd week of September?

You are using ANA Mileage Club miles? or do you have other miles balances?

It would be important to know which airlines (miles) are you trying to use. If you use ANA you should be stuck paying the taxes and fuel surcharge. While not being an expert on the ANA system (only use it to check out availability), you should be able to get the LAX-JFK flight on the same award (costing more miles and pending availability). Although the fuel surcharge on that flight might be the same as buying economy ticket. The mileage based awards are still relative good value (depending on how you got the miles of course).

Do you need to go through BRU in both directions or just do a stopover there once?

The actual taxes + YQ as charged by the airlines looks to be about $590 on JFK-BRU-JFK in Y. Not really sure where ANA finds the extra $300 in surcharges.

For your actual desired itinerary, check out:
    UA 934 LAX LHR 9/17/2012 5:51 PM 9/18/2012 12:15 PM 777 YA+ CS+ CA+
    LX 333 LHR ZRH 9/18/2012 1:45 PM 9/18/2012 4:40 PM 320
    LX 1664 ZRH VCE 9/18/2012 5:45 PM 9/18/2012 6:50 PM 319
That CS+ means it is available in Business.

How long do you intend to stay in Europe? That would help for figuring the return trip details. That said, I did find one option ex-BRU a week later:
    SN 501 BRU JFK 9/24/2012 10:20 AM 9/24/2012 12:35 PM 333 YS+ YA+ CS+ CA+ FS* FA*
    UA 771 JFK LAX 9/24/2012 9:00 PM 9/25/2012 12:35 AM 757

Searched using my Star Alliance Award tool here.
