I am flying to Istanbul for a few weeks from the US, and on the way back was going to stop in Amsterdam for a day (8AM - 8AM or something). As a US citizen, do I need some special sort of visa to leave the airport and roam about the city for one day? I've seen a ton of conflicting info on the web, so I figured I would check here before calling the embassy. :)

No, and Amsterdam's a great place!

Just don't do what the people in front of me in the transfer lounge did and get so stoned they missed their flight! (OMG, it was SO obvious, too, but the agents took it in stride.)

One day... ouch. That's a tough one. There are so many choices.

I see it as infinitely better than zero days!

My perspective on one day layovers is to aim to experience some everyday stuff rather than focus on one big thing.

Anthony Bourdain's The Layover tv show had an episode on Amsterdam that might be worth checking out if practical. The show is more or less about this exact sort of situation.

I had 23 hours in Amsterdam in November and loved it. There's plenty of stuff to check out, especially if you haven't already been. I'd been before for several days, but having 1 day in a city is better than 0 days!

In particular, I think the Amsterdam episode is the funniest television episode I've ever seen. Okay, maybe not the funniest ever, but there is a lot of humor to it. I picked it up on iTunes and had a whole room of people howling with laughter when we watched it.

You make me want to watch it. It's really that funny?

Let's put it this way: not everyone likes Bourdain's sense of humor. If you do, and actually like the fact that they let a bad boy like him on TV, you'll probably find it as funny as I do. Don't take my word for it alone, though, there's several commenters on one of my posts about it.

I like all The Layover episodes, but Amsterdam's the only one that had me rolling. Hong Kong is my second favorite because they did the whole Hong Kong cinema tribute.

    lucky you !!

    My three humble suggestions:
    1) The Van Gogh Museum, you could spend hours but a 1-2 hours will do just fine www.vangoghmuseum.nl/vgm/index.jsp?lang=en

    2) Enjoy a rijsttafel meal, which is not always easy to find outside of the Netherlands http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rijsttafel It is such a good meal !!

    3) Stroll & stroll along the canals, lovely.

Personally I prefer the neighbouring Rijksmuseum over the Van Gogh museum so I'd throw that on the list of possible things to do as well.
