Nice and clever benefit to help offset the losses.
The article you link is actually an AMEX press release, and contains this gem (highlighting mine):
Nice benefit but it definitely doesn't offset the losses they are experiencing. Are they actually looking into expanding the benefits to make up for what they've already lost they going to keep slowly losing good benefits and backfilling with lower quality ones?

"The AXP Plan only provides access to land-based Wi-Fi services and does not include in-flight Wi-Fi."
That nugget there is really the "gem" in this announcement. With so many free land-based Wi-Fi services everywhere, who would need boingo on the ground?
Something is better than nothing ! There is more to boingo than an airport. I keep seeing boingo signal now in some of the NYC subways stations and more
I'm guessing this only applies to US Plat. eh?
Boingo is sometimes helpful. Some airports use them and their free access (even watching their ads) don't work unless you pay for them.
Can be very helpful traveling internationally.
I had Boingo for years, paying $50 a month. It simply stopped being useful with free wi-fi almost everywhere, so I canceled.
As with all of these perks its worth varies by individual situation. From my perspective I think I will use it though it doesn't come close to making up for what's been lost.
I have a $10/month plan and I use it just often enough at airports that it is worthwhile.
Precisely why I find this benefit to be quite limited and few years too late: I have multiple ways -- some thanks to AMEX Plat -- to access airport lounges around the world all of which provide free wi-fi. At the gate area I just use my global phone for quick email checks, etc...

There's Boingo in a number of NYC subway stations, but they make you watch a 15 second ad, and by the time you click everything and watch and are connected, the train has frequently arrived. Has anyone been able to use the Amex Plat benefit to avoid the ad in the subways? I can't find a way...
The AMEX Boingo Wi-fi benefit has arrived. Here is the sign up page...
I am subscribed to Boingo through AmEx Plat...but not getting any use out of it.
Same here. Actually just uninstalled Boingo app. It has been draining my battery like crazy.
I ended up at a small airport somewhere or other with boingo-provided internet, no free option, and really bad phone reception...so the boingo actually came in handy. Wouldn't likely pay for an account, but it's worth having for free.
Dislike Boingo apps.......
Is this considered safe?
This is good.
Use VPN outside - Always.
I find that its quicker to connect with boingo over the free options. Quite often I've connected via boingo and my wife is still poking around trying to get the free offer to complete its connection.
Free option sometimes is good.
