I have a question regarding the Amex Platinum card. If I pay the $175 for my wife to be an authorized user on my account, does she get club access if she is flying by herself? I can't find a clear answer on Amex's website.

Yes she gets lounge access with the additional card...

however.. she does get access to the spending limit associated with the card.. just keep that in mind.

Lol, I'm very aware that she will have access to my line of credit!
So if I paid the $175 for the extra cards, each person can have club access any time they fly? Even without myself as the primary card holder?

Yes, her own lounge access. If you travel together you can each take 2 guests. And your wife can get her own Priority Pass Select card as well. And you will each be reimbursed the $100 Global Entry Fee. And she can get her own free shoprunner account etc.

BUT the $200 airline reimbursement is one per master account, so $200 total no matter how many additional cards you have.

Thanks for the quick response! That actually makes the fee seem worth it! One more question. If I were to get three additional cards, do they have to be for US citizens only? My in-laws are Canadian and don't have social security numbers. Can I list them as authorized users?

I don't know. They normally do require SSNs but I'm guessing if you call you might be able to add them since you're the one ultimately responsible. On the other hand, Canadian benefits are different, so you may just want to give your own US address when you add them. Say they're long-term house guests or something :)

I just called Amex, and they said providing the social security number is optional! It looks like it can be done!

Great to hear! Was she able to take advantage of free global entry?

While AmEx would pay for the Global Entry fee, the requirements for that service are set by the US Government. In your particular case, it would work, because Canadian nationals qualify for it.

For more details, see the following link:

Hmmm, new one for me Shoprunner?? I have not seen that as an advertised benefit of the AMEX Platinum Card. ( just googled it and see that is a free 2 day shipping and return service ) Is this a good service, and benefit. Thanks and Safe Travels

you can get shoprunner for free via other methods, too. not a benefit to count for AMEX Plat. all they have done is taken away from consumers the past two years

There is also the common carrier life insurance, extended product warranty, etc.

I have this (Platinum) card just for the benefits alone. For Points earning power I have the AmEx Preferred Rewards Gold, which makes a great combo and all additional cards are free.

Canadian citizens will probably get more use from NEXUS than just GE. It's cheaper too, but I don't know whether AmEx reimburses those fees.

Since when is the fee on the Plat card 175? The gold is 175 and plat is 450 unless I am mistaken.

It's 175 for an additional card on an existing Plat membership.

It's $175 for the first 3 additional cards. If you're going to get an additional card for a spouse, you pay the same as getting one for your spouse + 2 others.

I know some people who give the 2nd/3rd additional cards to other relatives/friends/clients and limit the spending on their card (you can limit spending to $200).
