I use SMGC at Costco, when I need the spend, one thing about Costco, best place to buy electronics, their return policy is unreal.

A friend in Alberta tells me it's looking kind of nasty- store employees got a directive to immediately dump anything with the AMEX logo in the dumpster.

Having an exclusive in such a large business is big for a credit card company; AMEX would have wanted to keep it. I'm suspecting M/C wanted market share, approached Cosco execs with a deal they couldn't refuse, so they went to AMEX with a deal that AMEX couldn't accept, no matter how much they wanted it.
