If it only worked. They need to hire a competent programmer.

On the official Amex facebook page, on the "points" tab, is the entry link. Some people are getting it to work, but I tried with Firefox and IE on two different computers and it failed. Others are reporting failures with Safari and other browsers. Maybe you'll have more luck. :)

I was going to apply, but I'm really not comfortable putting all that personal information in Facebook.

Well technically you're giving it to AmEx, and they already have it anyway -- and more. :)

But I see your point... depending on who put together the "app" that collects the info for submission, you could have some leakage. Then again if you're on facebook already chances are you're not too worried about your privacy. :)

Sorry, but that's quite incorrect. I don't put that kind of personal information on Facebook. I would do it if it was on Amex's site. But I don't want my address, phone number, etc. on Facebook.

I believe you have to be sign up with facebook to use this link, so if you don't want to join FB you're out of luck. Unless they have a link in the TOC to sign up directly?

indeed, but you can tell a lot of companies are moving in the social media direction for this type of thing. The time will come when you will need a facebook/twitter account to partake in this promos.

I think I figured out why it fails on all my computers- the "enter giveaway" button launches a doubleclick page, and I have doubleclick firmly blocked and blackholed on all my computers.

    :p

I'm with you. I have a fb account, but I use a fake name and I won't enter my phone number or address on the profile. Kind of excludes me from fb promos, but fb isn't good at keeping your personal info personal.

Nothing that a disposable fb account and some incognito browsing won't fix though. :)

So I have a question about the eligibility for this sweepstakes. Is it legal for AmEx to require that you be a member of Membership Rewards since you can't be a member if you don't have their credit card?

FB privacy is a moving target. They change the rules at will. Since their user interface is downright lousy it seems like they deliberately want to make it hard to control our privacy. Then again, it's not our privacy, it belongs to them; we're just borrowing (renting?) it.

Remember, this "generation" of tech leaders seem to have a very umm.."lax" view of privacy. After all, Larry Page(formerly of Google Inc.) was once quoted as saying something to the tune of "if you're not doing anything bad there is nothing to hide". However, that discounts others doing bad things with YOUR info ;). Be that as it may, I do have my Google Voice number on facebook and I use my real name, however, you would have to talk to me to know my name as legally I go by a different name :D

Which raises interesting issues, when financial companies (AMEX in the case of this thread) interact with their customers through an insecure interface (Facebook), and make moves (this promotion) designed specifically to draw their customers deeper into Facebook. And then they link it all to Doubleclick, which has been building a gigantenormous data center filled with tracking information on tens of millions of internet users, and they are developing very sophisticated ways to mine that data.

LOL... well said. For a million points I'd set up a false facebook persona and run all kinds of shenanigans from inside a virtual PC with a browser running in anonymous mode.

Lots of work and lots of hoops, but hey it's a million points. :)

I didn't go as far as to use a fake name but have a second FB account that has no information except my name and a secondary email address. I'd prefer not to share all of my friends info and personal data with more companies than I need to.
