Caught this trying to book an itinerary last night, can't get it to pop back up. Routing was IAD-DFW-MSY-DFW-IAD. Not a horrible deal for non-EXPs, considering the cost of stickers. There wasn't any additional detail on the bonus miles that I could find.

Has anyone else run into this?

Was this a close to departure ticket? AA has been selling LFBUs online for awhile. Or was this a ticket for a flight outside the traditional upgrade window?

We're you logged into your account while booking?

I received this offer for MIA-PTY in January. I was logged into my account and it was within three weeks of departure.

Waaaaay outside the upgrade window. Late June flight. Probably longest lead time for a ticket I've had in a while.

Doug's pricing is bound to be higher.

Was this when you were checking out/paying? I've often seen it shown as the fare difference between Y and F, was that the case here?

Missed answering DD's question about whether I was logged in as well. This was shown to me on the screen where you check the radio boxes for upgrades and seat selection. Right after I keyed in my PW (so the system knew who I was) but before actual seat selection or payment.

Was the $270 a discount from the fare difference to the lowest fare which would seat you in the forward cabin?

Yes, a significant one. The cheapest seat in the forward cabin was ~ $700 more than the discount fare I had selected.

Seems we have a bit of a disconnect. Pizzaman, are you certain the differential wasn't simply an offer to upfare as the linked threads from JonNYC's posts seem to indicate? Same graphic/language/offer as the FT threads.....

To be clear; I never "checked the math" on the FT thread-- but there sure seemed to be a solid consensus that is was simple fare diff. to (deep, deep) discount F. I'd strongly suspect this is the case-- again, without having tested it out and/or fact-checking it at all.

I was just offered the same thing on flight I booked from LAX - LAS in 2 months from now. They were asking 110 USD for First Class confirmed upgrade, which I rejected since it´s a very short flight and only 1 Sticker! Even if I was a PLT customer I´d rejected it! I just think it´s not worth it, but couldn´t say the same for other routes, specially transcon, if they offered me a confirmed upgrade on a transcon route for 700 USD or down with the option to earn more miles, I´d certainly think about it.

Hoping this is the case though it's going to be hard to really say based on one case that Ed tried to reproduce without success :)

I am 100% sure on this one case that it was not a simple fare difference. But, I only tried to recreate a time or two more, so sample size is beyond negligible. I did some mucking around with the choice plus fares for a blog post a month or two ago. During that exercise, I came across two choice plus fares a contact at AA couldn't explain (with screenshots).

So, unclear whether this is a feature or a bug. :)

I'd need to see a real-life example. Everyone I checked with denied there was any kind of paid-upgrade type program outside of what's been discussed.

Was pricing an upcoming flight yesterday. Using AA website, put in ROW-SFO. The system offered a paid upgrade option for appx. $170 per person at time of purchase. Only one of the two legs had a cabin to upgrade to (DFW-SFO).

Which sounds like a fare difference. What were the fares/prices involved?

Priced the choice non-refundable. Total fare without the upgrade was appx. $1500. Total fare with upgrade was appx. $2000. The option to pay to upgrade appeared right after inputting the passenger information and selecting continue button. The box for upgrade to first was directly above the seat selection box.

Additional data point. Was trying again just now to get exact fare for reference in above post and have been unable to get the upgrade offer again. Was pricing in late afternoon early evening PDT yesterday. Didn't see this thread until this morning otherwise, would have done screen prints.

Looking at ExpertFlyer, that's conceivable. Was $1500 one way or r/t? Fares on this range from $600 - $3800 r/t in the various classes.

I was just offered the "upgrade" for a west coast to east east coast one-way for $204.99. It was the exact difference in fare between Choice Plus and First (A).
