    (Copied from my blog)
American Airlines and China's 4th largest Carrier and ONLY SKYTRAX 5 star airline, Hainan Airlines today announced a new codeshare agreement to expand both of their presences and customer base in the USA and China. Hainan Airlines has been serving the USA via a single point in Seattle, Washington since June 10, 2008 but has yet to expand their presence or developed any codeshares with US carriers. However today that all changed with the new expansion and code share agreement with AA.

Under the agreement the following codeshares will be put in place:

    · Display of AA’s flight numbers (AA*) on Hainan flights between Seattle and Beijing as well as on Hainan flights beyond Beijing to Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Kunming and Urumqi.· Display of Hainan’s flight numbers (HU*) on American flights between Chicago and Beijing and Shanghai, Los Angeles and Shanghai, as well as on American flights to and from 12 other cities in the U.S.
This codeshare is a prized possession for AA as they try to expand their presence in Asia. Currently with no mainland Chinese carriers, both AA and OneWorld is missing out on one of the worlds fastest growing travel market. This may be just a first step AA and OneWorld takes to court a Chinese carrier into their alliance.

Looks like it's just the launch/implementation of the previously announced codeshares: LINK.

Any word on if or when we'll be able to earn AAdvantage miles when flying on one of their codeshares? I've got a trip to China in the Fall that I've been watching fares on and Hainan is constantly the least expensive, but I'd like to earn miles when I fly! Wouldn't we all? :)

If it's on an AA codeshare you earn miles just like an AA flight.

You can book direct. You just have to make sure that HU puts your AA FF info on your booking.

David, I thought that code shares work in both directions? I just did this with HA. Am I missing some details?

For you to earn AA EQM on HU, you need to be on the AA code. HU coded flights don't earn.

So you the flight might have a HU code and an AA code, but if you are booked on the HU code, no miles.

Some airlines, like HA and B6, allow you to earn RDM without a codeshare, or EQM and RDM without a codeshare (AS). Obviously this is not universal though and you need to check for each airline.

Makes sense, shame on me for making the assumption it would be the same for all partners. :(

It's an issue that trips people up quite a bit, no worries. You just have to be careful and check each earning rate individually.
