Has anyone gotten a retention bonus for a personal (or business) PRG card? My annual fee is due next month. I just called, and no offers, but I haven't cancelled yet. I just thought I'd see if anyone got any retention bonuses to keep the card. I have the the business card, and that fee won't come due until February, so I don't have to worry about losing the points.

I have never heard of a retention bonus for AMEX.

I was offered to upgrade my PRG to Platinum and got the same sign up bonus that was offered. All of your account history carries over then. Might be worth asking if you don't want to loose the longevity.

actually i was pretty unlucky.got a cs rep who had no idea about anything.basically she wanted me to just keep the gold and later apply for the plat.i asked about the 90 days rule..she put me on hold while she asked around, came back and said "oh yeah you're right" and cancelled my card.maybe i should have hang up and try again with another rep lol:)

That's strange. The rep when I called to ask about the upgrade email even explained that it was better to do the upgrade than to apply out right. It wouldn't be another hard pull on the credit report and I would still get the extra 50,000 points that was the offer at the time. I took a few moments to think about the extra annual fee and just took the plunge. I have no intention to ever go back. Best card hands down i've ever had. Best of luck.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm not sure I'm ready to spend the money on the platinum card annual fee, but I'll have to look into what the sign up bonus is currently. I figured there wasn't much in the way of Amex retention bonuses, but I had to ask in case I missed something.

I got the targeted offer for the 50k Plat business and I know some even got 100k offer. I thought about doing it but I opted for the SPG Business instead because of the increased bonus offer, no annual fee for 1st year, and I needed the couple of extra elite stays that is provided me with SPG. Maybe down the line they will offer me the Amex Plat Business again but with the 100k sign up instead. One can dream :)

I called Amex yesterday and got 15,000 MR points to keep a Business Gold card open. It more than made up for the $125 fee (plus I don't have to stress over what FF program to transfer points to since I have an incentive to keep the account open).

For business retentions, the phone number is 1 800 875 5592. I am not aware of the personal accounts number.

Amex may not have given retention offers before, but my 10-minute conversation with the customer service representative centered around how Membership Rewards have been devalued for my purposes (loss of Continental, Aeroplan charging YQ and increasing mileage required, etc), while Chase's partnership with United and better earning potential has made me switch more spending to them.

  11. I received a retention bonus on my Platinum Card. However, you need to ask to be transferred to a retention specialist. One of the reason I got one was I am flying United more so the loss of the lounge and points transfer made this a reasonable request. Good luck!

I have the Plat Card too. What did they offer you as a retention bonus?

I second that. I have no problem keeping the card but, I wouldn't mind a little extra incentive.

Just called for another Amex Business Gold (another business). First offer was $75 credit. Didn't accept it. Played hardball by saying AMEX isn't competitive with Chase. Got it up to full $125 credit. Was hoping for miles, but I'll take free flexibility of my Membership Rewards points :)

I was offered 12500 pts for spending $500 in 60 days, and keeping my AX PRG open. I did not accept, as I haven't been using the card, and $175 is too steep for me.

Finally called in about this a second time. Apparently Retention Specialists 'close' at 11 EST. Guess I'll be calling back tomorrow.

First time I was offered nothing except to downgrade my card to another AMEX card with no or a lower fee, but I didn't ask to talk with a retention specialist. I'm not sure I really want another AMEX card as I have enough cards already, and this isn't my oldest one. As I mentioned in the original post, I still have an AMEX PRG Business card, so I don't need to worry about losing the points just yet.

My coworker was offered 20,000 points instantly and 7,500 points after spending $3k for Personal Gold
