American Airlines has told over 11,000 workers they could lose their jobs as part of its reorganization in bankruptcy.

However, the U.S. airline, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November, said it expects that fewer than 40 percent of those it sent notices to, or 4,400 people, will actually be laid off in November and December.

It's good that they're giving notice. Will allow some to leave by choice, saving other's jobs in the process.

Unfortunate reality of today's airline world for the legacy carriers. Never a pleasant development.

Ran into two Southwest pilots in the elevator today...they both said they love working for Southwest, that employees are treated better than at the legacies. Sad that things are so bad for the legacies.

Inevitable, and all for the good of saving an airline, such as AA is. More downsizing to follow.

This was always going to happen though the timing is just awful. Just in time for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. :(

It'd be worse if they didn't restructure their operation. Then a lot more than 11,000 people (or whatever the final number ends up being) will lose their jobs.
