American Airlines announced plans Wednesday to lay off 1,200 nonunion employees, mostly in airport services.

The Fort Worth-based airline said its bankruptcy restructuring plan intends to cut costs in the agents, reps and planners work group by 20 percent, or $95 million.

“Not a single decision that affects a single employee was made lightly,” spokesman Bruce Hicks said. “We approached the task of determining these changes with extensive input from employees across the system and a commitment to make changes that will support a world-class customer service culture.”

It is unfortunate that these cuts will occur, however if it keeps American from being bought by another carrier it will certainly be in the best interest of their customers.
