    LET the posts fly....
Looks like the era of a trans-con widebody may be ending, but overall good for the airline and the rest of us (mostly..)

As always, thanks for the post and link AmericanAirlines. Really enjoy having a representative on the site for us.

I guess I'm not terribly surprised with such a large order that it is split with airbus.

so being more fuel efficient should lower fares or taxes/surcharges, yes, AA?

What kind of interior can we expect here? Are you finally installing IFE in Y?

As a bit of inside-airline geekery, how much mechanic retraining will the introduction of Airbus (versus a pure Boeing fleet) require, and how was that figured into costs?

And as for the recent cash in-flow with which this purchase was made possible, well, you're welcome....;)

Don't they have to retrain those MD80 mechanics anyway, whether they work on Boeing or Airbus?

Interesting development, however, I think it will be difficult to replace the 757 in the short term. The airplane is efficient and overpowered for its mission. I don't think the 737-900ER has the legs to do TA, and the 321 even with uprated engines is still a dog.

If Boeing is really considering a clean sheet new narrowbody, they should have re-done the 757...

Can't AA fill those routes with the 787 when it arrives?

I also think the replacement of the fleet comments are in reference to the domestic routes only.

It does have a future effect on transcon widebodies though. Interesting to see what AA will offer in the next few years.....

That I am worried will go away. Which is a shame because a widebody ride is so much more comfortable.

With regard to shorter thinner transatlantic routes yes, but the 757 is very versatile for high density domestic routes. The A321, even with uprated engines as of today, has neither the capacity or the range to do transcons fully loaded in winter. Just look at US Airways' record with that regard.

Also, in terms of useful life and durability, the Boeing is a much better airplane. Airbus is a throwaway airplane with I'd say a useful life of around 20 years. Boeing planes can serve 30 years or more...just sayin'

With the $ you save on fuel in that 10 years, you might still come out ahead or even? :D

Not to mention there is time between now and delivery, and even during the delivery stage, for flexibility. This isn't "all she wrote"....

Got something factual to back that up, or is that just another misplaced national pride "argument"?

Also, consider the aircraft AA is now replacing and their age... How well are those 30 year seniors doing in today's economic environment?

Would have to be 319 or 318 because of range.

Makes good sense to rationalize the fleet in advance of an acquisition by jetblue.

I agree about the age issue. With the way technology and innovation moves in our world, I'm not sure making a product that lasts 30 years is exactly the plus it might have been years ago.

Also, if it helps those concerned about the existing Boeing fleet, I believe they stated in the press conference that the refurbishment of the 757 and 737s will continue. So there's life yet in those birds.....
