The U.S. Department of Transportation said Monday it fined American Airlines Inc. $90,000 because the carrier didn’t disclose to people bumped from flights that they would have to pay up to $30 to redeem the travel vouchers they received for giving up their seats.
“When passengers volunteer to give up their seat on an oversold flight, they are entitled to be fully compensated — not to find out later that they’re getting $30 less,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said.
Half the penalty will be forgiven if American doesn’t violate the order in the next year.
