I wonder what prompted Amazon to do this. Despite our understandably biased perceptions, there really aren't that many people out there doing heavy MS - I'm sure the majority of users were "normal" folks using the service to pay bills owed to individuals (as opposed to a registered business), send money as a gift, etc. Amazon originally launched Amazon Payments to compete with PayPal; since PayPal still allows money to be transferred between individuals, this will give PayPal a strong advantage over Amazon Payments going forward.

I think its more they decided the payment service wasn't working out for them. It was supposed to be an alternative to paypal, but it never took off that well.

I wonder if them introducing their own mobile credit-card payment reader (like Square) influenced the decision? Maybe they're trying to move people to that? Yeah, not at all the same thing, but who knows how they think.

Woah. Totally would have missed this if I hadn't seen this post. So much for the $10 in plink points I had saved. :(
