When I find myself checking award wallet and reading travel blogs daily.....
When I have taken out a multitude of new credit cards the last two years, and after I meet the spends I start to think about the next ones I should get....
When my friends and family start making comments about how excited I get talking about miles/points...
When I sign up to go to my first FTU event ( in LA) and he says "you did what?"

How do other members handle this addiction? (and do I need a 10 step program?)

What does he say when you traveling C or F?

(and yes, I think some people take this hobby a bit too far)

    as HaveMilesWillTravel asks:
most sig others accept their mate's addiction just fine after enjoying the fruits of the addiction.

I think you'll find most people you know, their eyes will glaze over when you start talking points/miles/strategies. That is why it is fun to get together with fellow MPers at meetups or FTU, we addicts get/understand each other.

Personally I view my study & execution of travel/dining as my hobbies. While some of my friends are into fantasy football or baseball etc, I'd rather have a sharp stick in the eye. I'm sure they feel the same about my passion for travel/dining.:D

The trick is to make the marriage last until he sees the advantage of flying in business or first class, perhaps by you putting him in cattle class while you fly up front. Until then, your addiction may threaten the marriage. For me it would be a good risk/reward ratio - miles can be harder to replace than husbands.

Mrs. Rejuvenated thinks I've gone kuku for the amount of time I spend on MP alone. Thankfully she's asleep at the moment so no looks directed at me.

This is a recreational pursuit, so I treat it like other recreational pursuits. I
    * keep it in perspective
    * make sure my non-recreational obligations are all met
    * don't bore loved ones with the intricacies of how it works
    * pull the sticker price of each flight/hotel stay I paid for with miles/points (leveraging this knowledge can result in impressive "profit" numbers)

I only see 6 points to feed your addiction! :D

Truthfully, if you like to travel and hope to get enough for a dream trip (or eleven!), then looking back it is worth it! My siblings think I travel too much and spend too much time planning my travel, but when they get those C/F reward seats, upgrades on flights, lounge access or suites, they understand it a little bit more.

    I dont think so.

I've only recently got into this but already Have convinced the Fiance to start to do things. But her thing is, tell me what card to use and for how long.

We just recnetly booked our first award vacation, so I think that helped.

I had give a "test speech" for a Toastmasters speech evaluation contest today. I chose "Faster Free Travel" as my topic - basically elucidating the simple things everyone does here (credit cards, choosing airlines, earning points on the ground).

I have to say a room of fifty people were very interested in what I have to say. It must be the "free" part that does it.

I think that's how you have to sell it - otherwise it's not going to work.

If you find a 10 step (or 12 Step) anti addiction program that gives me miles. Be sure to post it here!

I liked everyone's comments and he did like it when we flew Cathay Pacific Business Class to HKG/SIN for our 30th anniversary a couple of months ago. (Still working on getting enough miles and points to do the J seats in the future). Plus we had a great vacation at a fraction of the cost it would have been (not that we would have spent that kind of money to do this vacation.....), but I think he wants me to find more of a balance (and empty the dishwasher more often. We both work FT). Nontheless, he isn't interested in attending FTU with me, so I hope to meet lots of other people with similar hobbies to compare notes with (and drink with). Mapsmith, I am looking for that program....

At the end of the day, you just need to keep it in perspective. I quickly learned not to talk to others about credit card offers, bonus sign-on's, current promos, etc. They will not only find it horribly boring, but will find your excitement over it to be, at best, odd. My fiance' loves that I do this, because it gets her incredible treatment when we travel (RA at IC) and better than cattle class when we fly. Instead of playing Sudoku or Playstation, we play the Points Game. Enjoy!

Yeah my wife glazes over when I bring up the miles and points stuff but yet she loves being in the front of the plane. The only major problem is getting her on board with the spending part. Like buying stuff online without going through the rabbit holes first or using the wrong credit card at the wrong restaurants.

If you really want to refocus your life away from points and miles, there is a 12-step programme that's very effective. It even offers miles and status levels at every step. I'm at Titanium. :D

How many miles do you get for a stick in the eye? Can you double dip on airplane and hotel programs, and then pay the hospital bill with an affinity credit card?

One of the best ways to alleviate this type of addiction is to donate your miles / points to another person.... say SOBORE? ;)
