So here's the deal, I was headed to LGA last night on the 5:00 PM from ORD. Got a text letting me know it had been delayed an hour to 6:00 PM departure. I had a tight connection at LGA (UA to US) and I knew that I would miss it, so I had the 1K line put me on the 3PM flight that had been delayed and was supposed to leave at 4:20. I got to the airport just in time and walked right on the plane. The thing is, I gave up first class on an A320 to fly in 22E on an A319.

Am I crazy for doing this, or would most of you do the same?

Not a huge deal ORD - LGA. Sometimes arrival time is more important that other amenities.
If you said ORD - LHR then yes you are crazy.[IMG]

Sounds like you made the right decision. FC on ORD-LGA isn't worth the possibility of stranding yourself at LGA during IRROPS on an interline itinerary. A middle seat in E- is unpleasant but sometimes "ya gotta do what ya gotta do!"

  4. At least you made a decision and not fully at the whim of the schedule

Glad to hear that you made it to LGA! When I left work yesterday (here in Upstate NY) ... it was super windy. I was wondering if it was the same down in NYC for you. I would have done the same thing. ORD-LGA is short.

Sounds like you made a good decision and are definitely not crazy. Actually making a connection and getting to your destination is often more important than sitting in first.

You absolutely made the right decision in my opinion.

Of course, to put this statement into perspective, I've turned down a battlefield on LGA - ORD because I was already settled into my E+ seat, had brought lunch on-board (5 guys!), the seat next to me was open, and the seat in F was a bulkhead and I had to work during the flight (so needed access to my satchel) - and from what I could tell the overheads were all full.

    I'm the anti FTer/MPer.

If you felt it was the right thing to do, then you made the correct decision.

If I had someplace to be by a certain time, darn right I'd take the downgrade, especially since it's only a two hour flight.

If your prime concern was making it to your destination and that would not have happened with a delayed flight, then you made the right decision. Being in a middle seat may be 'painful' for 2 hrs, but it is not the end, I am sure there will be other upgrades to be had in the future.

For a short (< 2 hours) flight, this is not a big deal. I often judge seat assignments by who I end up sitting next to - and lest I be called out for political incorrectness, I will not share my "Good-Bad-Ugly" seatmate list here, other than to say "empty next to" is at the top.

The thing you did wrong (imho) was bring hot fast food onto the plane. People who like it will be royally annoyed by the smell, since they can't/don't have any, and people who dislike it will just be grossed out...but that's a whole new discussion thread, I guess!

I would say you made the right choice and I've done similar things to get in earlier.

You made the right decsion. Its a short flight and being stuck in LGA would not be fun.

I did just that yesterday ORD-IAD: 18B on 320 instead of 3D on 752. Ended up seated between a 200lb woman in 18A and a 350lb (at least) guy in 18C, and no inflight service due to turbulence, but with the bad weather projected to hit East Coast, I'd rather get to my destination in E- than be stuck in a comfy seat at RCC.

My opinion is that the best seat is on the airplane that gets you to your intended destination when you need it.

With a tight connection like that, I'd say it was a no brainer.

I've done middle IAD-LAX for the same reason. I just hung out in the galley with the Stews the whole flight.

Yes, however, it is the nature of the airline business to "screw" customers to some extent... So they usually will refund you the fare difference between your paid F fare and the cheapest refundable fare... Heck, sometimes they calculate using the most expensive coach fare... Most of the time Y is more expensive than discounted First class fare :td:

I once downgraded SFO-ORD F to middle seat in E+ so I could get home 6 hours earlier.

My wife and I did this recently on a flight from PHL to MIA. We wanted the earlier flight, so we gave up our exit row together and got on the earlier flight. We were separated and in middle seats, but we ended up one of us in an exit row and one of us in the bulkhead.
