Connecting at SFO yesterday I saw an all white 747 taxi by. It was too far away for me to see the tail number. Anyone know what it is? (I've seen the creepy white planes at IAD but even they have a stripe and they aren't 747s) This 747 was spotted about 3:30 pm and looked like it was at a gate (probably around the end of the int'l terminal) around 4:30 as we taxied away.

The departure monitor also showed a flight headed to Victorville later in the day - never seen that on a departure board! From flightaware looks like it was a UA 772.

Isn't the President either in the area in the next few days, or was just out there? This might have been a military plane connected with that.

I remember about 10 years ago, we had a plain white 747 come in to London (YXU), and they painted it up to use as the President's emergency command plane in the movie The Sum Of All Fears. Not that wasn't news enough around here, it also coincided with a summit in Quebec City that President Bush was attending, and many thought the plane was being used as some sort of decoy for Air Force One, although that didn't explain why "United States Of America" was only painted on one side LOL.

It was a generic airplane. Much less expensive than a name brand airplane. On board you get cola and blocks of cheese. They also OEM the sandpaper.... I mean TP that DL uses for the restrooms. The inflight magazine is called "Printed Material" and the IFE has a "Movie" and a "TV Show".

Was it going to a gate or could it have been for cargo?

Here these are a pretty common - usually the white/silver/unmarked 747s we have are cargo flying over less-than-friendly skies. Never really give them much thought honestly[IMG]

I have to add, I noticed a very nice white 747 land and taxi/park in front of the BR windows Saturday during the pANCake run thanks to this thread :) They're beautiful planes to begin with but no paint designs to muck it up is just wonderful.

  13. From when I worked it, a backup is at least within 8 hours scramble.
It was probably a cargo or Hollywood other plane, because all official use and charter aircraft are well marked to avoid in-flight issues under flag. Most of the entourage flies commercial (in advance) and not on Uncle Sam Airlines unless its more cost effective. (Business over 12 hours travel)

As I recall the story, it was a UPS bird that was all white. They brought it here for some reason to do up the faux US government look, took it to wherever to film the scenes in the movie, and brought it back here to make it all white again.

  15. Fortunately, USPS air force is nearly non-existent. They rather contract with commercial airlines as US Airline Welfare :p

I flew into SFO last weekend and noticed a 747 in the new Continited livery. Maybe it was this one prior to repainting?

There are a huge number of old 747's in cargo service that are all white. There are also several dozen of them as private aircraft and lotsa of them are white too. It could easily have ben either of those. At SFO both are common sights.

You did not see the white 747 that you think you saw...it was probably a reflection or solar flare or something. Please move along, nothing to see here.

China Airlines and Korean Air have both had white 744s come into SEA...either leased or purchased used and not yet painted...
