    Is there a place where I can find our what all those letters people mention mean? F? Y? C? etc? I do not know how to search or even what they are called!
    Thanks.

    The letters denote classes of service on the airplane.

    F = First
    C = Business
    Y = Economy

    Sometimes other letters are used as well (i.e., J for business)

    You can search by putting those letters with the word class and airline. It should bring you to a travel wiki of some sort. I just did it recently but don't remember as I am typing on a phone.

    Some European airlines call Economy "M" even though we know it most as "Y"

    Premium Economy is either W or Y+

    The general, generic letters, F, Y, C, J are used across most airlines. However, each airline has their own breakdown of "fare buckets" indicated by the letters, with their own rules applying to each one. As an example, look at this chart to see all the Delta fare classes (all 26 of them, and if our alphabet had more letters, they'd create more fare buckets just to add granularity and confusion to pricing). :)

    On DL it's E+, just to be different.

    I feel for the OP. It is a nightmare most of the time to figure out what these letters indicate and to know before hand (when booking) what class the ticket will be. Very few airline's websites indicate this class in letters when making reservation. Would be nice if they all clearly state that the ticket chosen now is e.g M-class ticket (Economy) so the booker already knows what's up!

    I recall when I first started seriously monitoring my flying (and actively pursuing points and status), doing my initial research and seeing the fare bucket concept and the huge number of different letter classifications. It was quite overwhelming and confusing, I didn't know how much of it I had to memorize or how deeply I needed to read the fare rules. Over time it started to become clear, but it definitely forms a barrier in this game, one that gives the airlines a big advantage over passengers.

    It can be a huge difference! I just booked flights on Singapore and really had to look to make sure I was earning miles on the fare. Thankfully I caught the fare rules, and ended up paying ~$100 more roundtrip, but it was the difference between 22000 EQMs/RDMs or 0 EQMs/RDMs :eek:

    Over here, the difference can run up to hundreds just to get the qualifying tickets. That is why sometimes, my other half doesn't see the sense in paying so much more just that we get back some points back from the flights

    You learn with time and practice--like anything else. I've mostly memorized the UA hierarchy without trying.

    That's true. I should say I've mostly memorized the old hierarchy. All those new upgrade codes confuse me.
