I currently have an award business ticket on AA and CX from LGA-YYZ-HKG, then HKG-JFK.

Am I allowed to change my outbound flight to JFK-HKG w/o a change fee? Does up-faring to first class help?

Also, if I might end up paying a change fee anyway, am I allowed to change the return leg to HKG-JFK (stopover)-ORD, and save the JFK-ORD leg for a later date?

    Thanks!

Routing change means a change fee.

You can change your return to HKG-JFK-ORD, sure, and make JFK a stopover (North American gateway city stopovers are permitted on international awards), flying JFK-ORD later on, sure.
