On a recent DCA-BOS flight, the passenger next to me order wine. When she asked the Flight Attendant, "How much?", the Flight Attendant responded, "Alcohol is free on the shuttle."

    Is this actually policy?

I assumed the flight attendant was concerned about servicing the entire plan and didn't want to spend time messing with the credit card reader so she gave the wine away. However, I rarely fly US Air, so I really don't know...

In coach, free wine and beer, no hard stuff.

To read the title another way, I am alcohol-free on the
Shuttle on flights departing before 10 am.

Yes - beer and wine has always been free on the shuttle. It's a route that always reminded me of what flying was... lots of room in the overheads, quick boarding and deplaning (front and rear doors). Generally light loads. Walk up ticketing / checking...etc.

Not so on DCA-BOS anymore. Since JetBlue entered the market, I've regularly seen ~$150 roundtrip with advance purchase.

    DCA-LGA is certainly another story.
