With airlines on razr thing margins as it is, i'm surprised they're putting the effort into name brand items when cheaper android devices would work even better.

With the iPad it is all about prestige and of course for apple a market which should give them good ads / uses plus new customers even. It's always nice to have a brand people find familiar and wholesome even in their opinion. I'm sure when the introduction is a real success and enhances the IFE experience, it's a good thing. Regarding the costs of such devices, they will be absorbed somehow, hopefully without extra fees or add ons.

I am pretty sure Samsung's name recognition would work just fine. Asus, Acer and others would work too and provide less of an incentive to steal the tablets.

Seems to be a case, that Apple is Apple. It's not really only about the name, it's about marketing, it's about converting non-Apple users even into customers. This could be the opening to an really important market for the tablet makers as passengers as we all know a captive audience.

If apple wanted to convert non apple users they should make a superior product.

So far, they've not done this. At least not cost effectively.

They dominate the lifestyle niche, this commands a premium and gives cache to their customers, just ask the hipsters.

I guess it is possible that Apple is subsidizing the whole affair. If not, just from the costs/maintenance perspective I would call going with iPad a silly move.
