Sometimes supposedly peak holiday travel days can be great for international travel, including upgrades and award tickets. If you can get a nonstop flight, the only problem is the potentially long lines for check in/bag drop if necessary and security, but elite status can solve this pretty well even in crowded airports.

Yes, much to my surprise, there is Z availability on DL for the days I'm looking at LHR-XXX-LAX-XXX-LHR! :)

If you are willing to travel on Christmas day, loads are usually very light. A former colleague flew to Australia last year over Christmas, leaving on the 24th, and arriving on the 26th!

He was able to redeem a j award ticket on qf at least.

But it seems UA/CO has also reduced international capacity on certain routes over the holidays. Eg try to find UA900 SFO-FRA on 11/23 (day before Thanksgiving). That used to be a cheap trip to Europe with great upgrade chances. Doesn't seem to operate this year.
