Fliers in the U.S. paid an average fare of $379 in the first three months of the year, just $1 higher than the same period last year, the government reported Wednesday.

The fare in 2013 dollars was down 19.1 percent from a high of $468 in 1999. Consumer prices overall in that period rose 41.1 percent.

When not adjusted for inflation, the $379 average was the highest for any winter quarter since the Bureau of Transportation Statistics began collecting records in 1995, beating last year's first-quarter average by $6.

The average fare at Chicago O'Hare in the first quarter was $391.19, up about $8 from the 2012 period. The average at Midway was $315.14, up almost $15 from the first quarter of 2012.
