I really don't see how YTZ makes a lot of business sense for AC. Now, or before. There is no connection traffic, no chance to leverage the YYZ infrastructure, struggle with a competition-owned terminal and limited slots.

Let Porter do YTZ and just focus on YYZ as the Toronto hub.

Other than having a foothold at BBTCA, AC only has one route. Never really made sense that if they actually wanted to use that airport why it has not added other routes. The last time slots were awarded, an independent contractor awarded all 16 new slots to PD based on need and usage criteria and gave none to AC.

AC only really went into YTZ because they couldn't bear having a successful airline running Montreal-Toronto flights. It was more about getting into Porter's face than any business case. But it's not like Porter is about to fly YTZ-LHR or HKG. There's room for both.

That being said competition is always good. I have another thought and that is AC could be planning to buy Porter as it is potentially for sale.

You could be right about AC buying Porter, but that would be anti-competitive.

if they don't fly out of that airport then is accretive and not anti competition. Besides AC could then open it up to other *A carriers so the appearance of competition would be there. There is no real competition from that place now although we know that Porter does not fly ex YYZ.

Have to say I like the option of flying right into the downtown area and saving the 60$ taxi and time to get downtown from YYZ.

Granted I could do that with porter, but then I wouldn't be getting miles ;)

Yes, but you do get a snack and a drink. What's the AC service like on that route?

Both have gone down, in terms of lounge food and snacks. I haven't flown PD lately, but AC used to give a sandwich and a drink. Last few AC fights it was the snack basket and drink service. But its still more than you get going to YYZ.

The lounge now has a little pay café, since then the free options have gone a bit downhill.

Interesting to see if PD improves the lounge after AC pulls out. Time will tell, I suppose.

I last flew PD two years ago. Not sure when the chance will come again.

I flew PD a couple of months ago and was happy with the experience. They still serve free beer and small sandwiches on the flight. There was a funny incident on mine where the flight attendant had to ask if the customer was of age and he replied, which country? :) Flying EWR-YTZ she told him she could say US, but Ontario would be fine. Then another guy she had already served piped up and asked in that case, could he have a beer too!

The lounge is definitely not as good as it used to be GREAT. Nevertheless it is passable (or I have gotten used to lounges in the US! :p )

Lounge definitely went downhill after PD had to start sharing with AC.

Yes, it can make sense for (some) pax. But I don't think there are enough that it makes business sense for AC. Concede that market to PD and focus on YYZ.

In that sense you're correct. Can't talk about passenger loads with PD, but with AC the plane is rarely more than 50% full.

Here's hoping the success of Billy Bishop exceeds the success of the Leafs.

    Interesting stat.

    $750M?

I did not realize it was the 9th largest in Canada and carried 2.4M passengers (7.5% of Pearson). I could not imagine there would be huge growth unless the buyers are super confident that the jet ban would be lifted.

The buyers are knowledgeable people like Larry Tannebaum who is a zillionaire among others in the group. So they know the value is there.

    Speaking of the maple Laffs:
Strange game at The Air Canada Centre the other night.

Vancouver and the Leafs were scheduled to play. Due to some transportation issues Vancouver did not show up.

The referee explained that if this is to be an official game he must drop the puck and a goal has to be scored.

TheLeafs took to the ice and were credited with a 1-0 win when Phil Kessel scored 2 minutes into the third period.

    I'm surprised it didn't go to a shoot-out.
