MONTREAL - Air Canada is going to start charging passengers a fee to check their bags when they fly economy class to the United States, including infants with no reserved seats.
The country's largest carrier informed passengers on its website that it will charge $25 for the first checked bag and will tack on another $5 to bring the cost for a second bag to $35.
There will also be a $70 charge for second bags on some international flights, though the first checked piece remains free of charge.
The charges apply to tickets issued beginning next Wednesday for travel on or after Oct. 11.
The checked bags must have a maximum weight of 23 kilograms.

Now if only Southwest flew to Canada - I beleieve they continue to offer 2 bags.

Anway, AC is giving the advantage to PD and WS for non-status passengers flying cross-border.

    A comment and a question.....

Charging for bagage on domestic flights is next.
    Why transborder?

Will have to remind friends and family who may be booking tickets in the near future to book them before the increase takes effect.

I wonder if WS will 'match' the fees. Hopefully it will be like the US airlines when one of them tries to institute a fare raise. If the others blink, the increase goes into effect, if the others balk, they drop the increase.

Westjet and Air Canada did match fees last time around, so I'd expect they will again. Porter might hang on, but their 50% has me a little worried for their stability. Hope it's misguided.

Because every US based carrier minus, jetblue and Southwest, charge for checked bags. Now you guys get to deal with the joys of people packing their kitchen sink on their flights.

This is why I fly & own WestJet...
According to them 'We have no plans to impose a baggage fee for transborder flights at this time'.

At this time are the "wiggle words".......

  16. Agreed.....WJA will continue down the road with false advertising suggesting they are the low cost carrier when, in reality they simply mirror AC pricing on competitive routes.

Believe me people have been doing that on AC flights already. Wish the gate staff would be more vigilant on carry on. The great team at SFO yesterday was doing just that.

AC no longer offer 1 free additional baggage for Star Alliance Silver members !!!

  25. The biggest problem of AC not charging the one baggage fee and all the
other U.S. *A carriers doing it was that there was a rude surprise
when flying one travelled on an AC codeshare on UA/CO/US. At least now,
you know exactly where you stand and whether you have to fork over
    some cash or not.

So, just wait when a WestJetter boards a codeshare flight on AA or DL
and the check-in agent holds out his/her hand asking for $25. That'll be a
rude awakening. Let's see how WS handles this one!

At the end of the day, while WS says that they will not charge the one
baggage fee right now, let's be honest, it'll just be a matter of time
before they say, "we are levying fees to increase our competitiveness
    on the transborder market".
