After Decades, La Guardia Airport May Allow Long-Haul Flights to Los Angeles, San Francisco

According to recent reports, the ban in place since 1984 at LGA, limiting flights to no more than 1500 miles out of LGA, may soon be lifted. This could mean that flights from La Guardia may soon reach non-stop to US West coast destinations, and perhaps even beyond.

I've never been to LGA. I don't want to go there. I really don't want to spend four or five hours on a plane contemplating that I'm going to arrive in LGA.

We've always had Newark. If it's good enough for Tony Soprano, it's good enough for me.

    Why?

Except for UA/AC's areas, LGA is a relatively nice airport these days. DL and AA have done large Capex projects in the last four years.

And, for many destinations in the ny area, LGA will save you 20-30 minutes of ground travel time.

When was the last time you visited?

They already allow perimeter exceptions from DEN and for flights to anywhere on Saturday. Periodically, carriers have run once a week frequencies down to AUA and other distant tropical ports.

There is no immigration hall at LGA, so any overseas location requires preclearsnce facilities.

The runways are only 7,000 feet long, so pretty much the largest plane the field can handle is a 767. Even that was closer to the limit than I'd like.

    Sadly, I don't own the airport....yet!

The family of a friend of mine owns the Canberra airport. What a splendid investment that has been.

Why do some Ausralians say Cānberra and others say Canbērra. Nobody down there seems to know.

I was there on Wednesday and the main parts of the terminals isn't too bad but some of the airport is awful. I was shocked to see how dirty the bathrooms are near baggage claim in Terminal C. I think it's a good thing to allow longer flights though.

I guess I'm way behind the times on this one. Last time I flew out of LGA it was to LAX, so it must have been 1984 or before. I didn't even realize there was a rule banning those flights until just now. Guess that explains why it was the last time I flew out of LGA, being most all my domestic flights from NYC are to the west coast.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but how will allowing longer flights help to improve the cleanliness of airport lavatories?

It wouldn't. I guess I was thinking out loud about how they should improve what they are doing already before they allow longer flights.

Or it could have been on a Saturday (when the rule does not apply). A few carriers have made this run on Saturdays in the past. None lately.

All of the airlines' areas, except the UA/AC/B6 areas, are reasonably nice and recently renovated. DL has done significant makeovers to D and C and AA has done decent work in Pier D of Terminal B (main terminal). Even the Marine Air Terminal is looking a little better these days.
