    WASHINGTON (AFNS) --
Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James, in coordination with the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Frank Kendall, has determined the Boeing 747-8 will serve as the next presidential aircraft, commonly known as Air Force One.

“The presidential aircraft is one of the most visible symbols of the United States of America and the office of the president of the United States,” James said. “The Boeing 747-8 is the only aircraft manufactured in the United States (that), when fully missionized, meets the necessary capabilities established to execute the presidential support mission, while reflecting the office of the president of the United States of America consistent with the national public interest.”

Analyses of the capability requirements conclude a four-engine, wide-body aircraft is required to meet the needs of the Air Force One mission. Market research determined there are two four-engine platforms that could meet the requirements; the 747-8 manufactured by Boeing in the state of Washington, and the A380 manufactured by Airbus in Toulouse, France.

Good choice! After they remove all the specialized, secret, unique equipment from that beautiful current AF1 B747-200 when she's retired, perhaps Randy could purchase her for great heavily discounted flights for MP members all over the globe. Or take up a collection on MP (I'd happily contribute almost $1.50) to buy the plane as a flying museum for charter flights everywhere. We could also have a contest to select her new MP paint scheme with the current MP logo of a plane on a plane, which would also be easy as the blue is already there in part. Winning entry would then get one free flight a year forever on the aircraft, with friends and family, to anywhere in the world and beyond. The winning person would suddenly have lots of new friends and family of course, but adding a few additional slimline seats could be added rearer for L class members who would only be permitted to travel with a small carryon while carrying quietly on with the partying, for weight and balance reasons.

Has anyone mentioned that to Randy P. yet? Super idea to draw loads of new members to MP, if only to have a chance to ride on the great plane, but only after attaining status on MP first which would mean they'd then have to post many substantial postings of informative, helpful, friendly, useful comments and information on here. That would keep the retired AF1 still airworthily and not junked, as it would also do for many current MP members.

Edit: Just read that there is a second B747-200 used as a spare for AF1 in case she's in for maintenance. I forgot about that, so Randy should purchase the additional aircraft for the same reasons. In that case our donations for the effort should of course be doubled, but with a discount added, so I`ll increase mine to start to at least $2.97 with the discount applied. Naturally, there would also be certain menu changes on board the MP aircraft, with the addition of Freedom Fries being the first change. Salt and catsup are optional however, but vinegar may be included at no charge.

Can you just image a formation of both of those B747`s with the MP logos flying wing tip to wing tip overhead?

I read an article a while back saying Airbus was not willing to manufacture the plane in the states so AF had to go for the 747-8 anyways...

I suspect that even if Airbus were willing to manufacture the plane, the AF would appear to do a bona fide effort to select the "best", but then they would ultimately decide that they found Boeing to be the "best" because it would be unthinkable for a foreign company to be selected to manufacture the "Nation's Plane"...

That too -- just a political thing to mention they're considering Airbus anyways when it's almost certain they're gonna go for Boeing.
