Typically I fly BA, but I hate their fees. Any advice on OW carriers that would be good options for J or F? Traveling from DC (DCA or IAD) to VCE. Then we are on a cruise. And return flight from ATH back to DCA or IAD. Prefer good J or F service, and no more than three connections. Thanks for your ideas and advice!!

Iberia serves NYC and VCE. So dc-JFK-mad-VCE?

Two additional connections to avoid the fees? Really?

You can also use AA JFK-MXP and then fast train (2 hours, very comfy) to Venice...

In any event since the OP did not mention whether he was talking about paid tickets one is forced to presume the only real relevance for mentioning BA fees would suggest an award, since a paid BA ticket is likely to be competitive with just about any other carrier.

BA and AA seem to have very similar prices for paying tickets... awards are entirely different story...

Op said "no more than three connections." My proposed routing beats the fees and meets the requirements. Problem?

The other thing that would be nice to know are travel dates...

Thanks all. We will be using miles for the tickets, so I'm trying to get your input in order to book the tix at the 11 month mark. DC-VCE is on August 13, 2014. ATH-DC is August 24, 2014.
I realize DC isn't an airport code....we can do IAD, DCA or BWI. Thank you!

For VCE at least you have options. I'm not aware of any Oneworld carrier besides BA that flies to Athens - and their flight goes to London Heathrow (naturally). So you may be stuck with paying BA's fuel charges on at least the return ATH - LHR leg of the trip, plus the taxes associated with LHR.

Qatar at least flies to Athens but I don't know if they have any fifth freedom routes. They join OW the 30th of October.

BA is hardly the only OW carrier that flies to ATH, it is however likely the only useful one when considering a standard award with AAdvantage.

Carriers like QR and RJ, or non-OW members EY and LY require routing through the ME which is not allowed on a standard award. IB and S7 have seasonal flights depending on when the OP is going.

OP said that leg was August 24, so that might work. I know when I searched for a routing to ATH on an award ticket a few months ago I wasn't seeing either of those airlines coming up on my searches (either on AA and BA's websites, or using general search tools like ITA Matrix and Kayak), but my flights were for a later date and so presumably out of season for those two carriers.
