We're planning a summer trip to Athens and are considering staying about 20 minutes from downtown. Curious if anyone has experience with renting a car and using it to get around Athens? Or, using taxi cabs for longer distances?
Driving in Greece is like driving in southern Italy, maybe a little more aggressive. It's totally fine and safe, you just have to take it slow and be a little bit more alert than what you're used to. We rented a car from Hertz, the Piraeus location next to the cruise port, it was quick and painless. Car was new and has low miles. There are so many cool things to see outside of Athens, including Temple of Poseidon which was a beautiful, leisurely drive on the coast about an hour from Piraeus. You also get the flexibility to drive to hundreds of small beaches which are a lot less busy than the major beaches, perfect for a picnic In conclusion, I would totally rent a car again.
