    Hello,
I take my mom to Las Vegas each year for her birthday, (she is going to be 76). This year there are no direct flights from PSP. I booked her on an American flight number but it is operated by USAirways. So she has to go, PSP-PHX-LAS. The original booking had a little over an hour layover in PHX.
Anyway, they changed all of the flights and there is now a 2 1/2 hour layover in PHX, I would like to change just one segment so she only has a one hour layover.
Has any one ever been successful in getting the change fee waived for something like this? I am willing to pay any fare difference.
    Thanks for any advice.

I did this before. AA did a schedule change on my flights and I was departing 2 hours later than previously.

Change fee waived as I changed to a flight 4 hours later. (So I could sleep in) Might take you 1 or 2 calls though depending on the rep.

Are you sure an hour is enough for an elderly person to make a connection at PHX? It's a big airport and a US hub, so the gates could be far apart.

Couldn't she call for a driver at the gate at her age?

    absolutely ......
I did think about that. Maybe I should actually DO something about it?
I told her that, but since she doesn't have to go land-side, I did not think it would be so bad.....

I know there is somewhere on the Rez to add/ask for accommodations

Having had a tight connection in PHX before and walked what seemed to be five miles between US gates from one end of the airport to the other, I would feel much more comfortable with a 2 1/2 connection than a 1 hr connection. And I am not 76 years old yet. But I want to reach that age and extra stress may be counter-productive.

I would echo the others here and suggest you talk to AA's accessibility people. My partner is moderately disabled and prone to DVTs and when I made a reservation for him earlier this year and mentioned it, the Agent set up a phone call from the AA access desk. They called about 14 days before departure and asked what accommodations he needed to have a safe and comfortable trip.

At PHX, you can't pre-reserve the carts so far as I know, but you can always call AA Reservations and have them request the accessibility agents call you (or your mother) to see how they can help. I don't know how likely you are to get the flight changed, but at least this would give you a little peace of mind about the connection.

In addition to the possibility mentioned by others that the gates could be a long distance apart, experience tells me that allowing more time at PHX is never a bad idea. Dating back to when they were America Worst and continuing through to US, not one single connection at PHX has ever gone as scheduled for me. It's either a late arrival of the inbound making it exhausting to reach the on time outbound, or I get there and get stuck overnight due to mx.

If the flight from PSP-PHX is not mainline, the odds increase that it could arrive later than scheduled. If I were scheduling a 76 year old (or my 56 year old self!), I would want more time than one hour to feel comfortable connecting there. I hate hanging out in airports, but I hate it worse when it's due to a misconnect. Buy her a day pass to the Admirals Club instead of spending the money on a fee change. :)

btw... Very nice of you to take your mother to Vegas as a birthday gift. My father is now 89, suffering from Alzheimers and (obviously) can no longer travel, but he always loved going to vegas. Any casino, for that matter.

One year I offered to take him to Hawaii for his birthday. He has never been, and I really wanted him to see it. He was probably 76 at the time. He had no interest. Wanted to go to Vegas. So we flew First Class to Vegas for far less than the trip I offered would have cost.

My dad was the sports editor at one of the Dallas Newspapers as his career. When we boarded, I noticed that the guy in front of me had his foot resting on the back of the seat in front of him. This was on National Airlines, so there was a lot of legroom. My thinking was that Sasquatch was in that seat. During the flight, Sasquatch got up to use the lav. It was Joe Theismann. My dad was never starstruck, as he had met more sports stars during his career than any of us average folks (although I did tag along quite a few times as a kid), but he did enjoy chatting with him as we deplaned.

Travel... You just never know who you are going to meet. :)

Thanks for all the advice. I think I will just stick with the schedule change and call AA to let them know she may need assistance getting to the gate on the return.

:D All the lovely PHX two-step. I've been rerouting myself intentionally through there of late... plenty of good windows to gawk out of at the airport and the extra segment credit never hurts.

You just need the right AAngel at the gate in PHX, explain the purpose of the trip, and work your charms and I'm sure that will roll your way. So much easier when you're in the same PNR, but I've had it done that way too.
