My wife and I are adopting a little boy from Ethiopia and we are required to make two trips for the legal process and obviously we get to bring our son home on the second trip. Does anyone have any experience with adoption air travel? Is a direct flight proffered or should we take a connection to break up the flight?

  3. Good luck and congratulations to your family. While I don't have experience with adoption flights, I wanted to direct your attention to the Mommy Points blog on boardingarea.com if you are not already familiar with it. It has tons of information about traveling with small children.

Congrats on such a wonderful thing! I sent you a "conversation" message with a link to a friend's blog who adopted a little girl from Ethiopia almost 3 years ago. Maybe it will give you some ideas/info about the trip and other things. Good luck!

Thank you all very much. Once we get a referral maybe you all can help me plan the first trip. Since we aren't bringing our son home then I wanted to surprise my wife with a little stay over in London or Paris or maybe Istanbul. All depends on award availability but its looking like we are going to have to use Sky Pesos which aren't the most helpful in the world.

Ill post an update when I have one.

I'll join in the general congratulations! You'll likely have a tough time getting to Ethiopia on Skypesos. As far as I know neither DL nor AF fly to Addis Ababa. I believe that KLM does and it is also a Skyteam partner. Just remember to be flexible in your routing and take it segment by segment until you find an award that works. Good luck!

Times have changed, as far as I know. When I was adopted my parents didn't have to make a trip out of the US, I know when I flew over it was Gimpo > Seattle > San Diego I think. Was told I was really quiet and slept the entire way, not bad for tpac flight @ 4months old.

Congratulations on the adoption and fingers crossed for a speedy process!

If I recall, only Ethiopian flies direct from the US (IAD) to ADD. They are supposed to be joining Star Alliance in the near future (they were accepted last year).

IIRC, they also offer flights form ADD-IAD via FCO, and Rome would not be a bad romantic spot for you and your wife.

Just want to add my congratulations on your son.

I knew some people in Australia who adopted a couple of children from Ethiopia. They did break up the trip on the way back. They had to do so because there are no any direct flights from Ethiopia. However, I think they thought it would be too much for the children to do all at once. It must be overwhelming to take a flight for such a long time for the first flight ever. In the case I mention the children were 4 and 6. I know on their stopover they basically just stayed at the hotel, took the children swimming etc.

Congratulation! How exciting! I think this is a problem for all parents, trying to figure out the best way to travel. :) When thinking about how we have traveled with our son, from he was 3 weeks old, I think I would take the fastest way back home.

When I was adopted, 37 years ago, my parents got me sent to Norway from Seoul with escort. I think that was the most common way to do it back then.

    Xxx.
