I currently have 48 nights and just completed a 3 night stay, so once these room nights post to the system (in 1-2 days), I will have enough for Platinum status. According to the people I spoke with at Starwood, I will receive Platinum status solely for 12 months (they claim it is a rolling calendar year by date earned). I even had her ask for a supervisor - and got the same answer.

However, according to the Starwood T&C's, I will earn Platinum status for the remainder of 2012 and for all of 2013.http://www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/legal/spg_terms.html#7

I assume I should listen to the T&C's and not the people I spoke with at SPG, correct? Can anyone confirm their experience?

I'm shocked that SPG agents and a supervisor would be so badly trained on such a basic feature of their program. The "make up any answer if you don't know" customer service agent culture within the travel industry is appalling. If you know especially the supervisor's name, you should pass this experience on to SPG Champion so that people can be retrained.

I'd highly recommend working through Starwood Social Media. My several years of Platinum Status has made me realize they're more responsive, more professional and more able to "get things done" than even Platinum Concierge.
They're super fast on email: smassistance@starwoodhotels.com

If you're on Twitter, I'd also highly recommend following them and interacting that way.

Well, I have the answers now. I was upgraded to Platinum today - and I also happened to check into the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit the same day. My Platinum status hit a few hours after I checked in - but I went back to the front desk to see if they'd honor me as a Platinum, and they did :) I love the SGS! And I'm psyched that I can enjoy their amazing breakfast buffet tomorrow AM.

As for how long this status will last - I assume it will be through the end of 2013. The 10 suite night awards I received are good until Dec 2013 - so I assume that my status will be as well (and isn't a rolling year as the people who I spoke with said). I guess I'll know for sure when I get back to the States and see my membership card with expiry.

My bet is that it will be February 28, 2014 if you were upgraded the last day or so. You would never get less than one full year at the elite level earned, regardless. You should have all of 2013 to renew it beyond that date.

Don't fall into the trap that thinking expiration of elite status has anything to do with the expiration date of Suite Night Awards. The only new benefits that I'm aware of that are tied to expiration of status, are Your24 and Platinum100. If you don't renew for these in a given year, they will go away the following February.

Just wanted to give everyone an update... my Platinum status is good through Feb 2014. Quite amazing that if you earn it early enough you can get almost 2 years of Platinum status. Gotta love it.

I've also had the oppty to use the Your24 benefit - and it works pretty well. Was able to check in at 7pm and out at 7pm with no problem in a NYC hotel.

    Congratulations!!!

If you manage to get 25 stays / 50 nights early in the year, then yes, the status is good for nearly 2 years.

I have seen it mentioned before that one can game the system by staying 25 stays /50 nights in Jan-Feb every other year and maintain Platinum status every year.

How is not using your benefits "gaming the system" in any meaningful way?

i completed my challenge on Jan 2, but was told that in order to be a PLAT i would have to complete my 25 stays this year to maintain it for next year... weird

Why is that weird? The maximum time that programs will typically match for is around a year and a half. Sooner in the year and they figure you have plenty of time to earn the status for real.

no, i meant weird as the T&C says i will have it the remainder of the year as well as the following year... i hit Plat on Jan 2 or Jan 3 of 2012 but was told i will be soft landed to Gold in 2013 if i do not make the stays
it was the T&C for the challenge, not regular Plat req.

and the only thing weird was i assumed the year of 2013 plus the remainder of 2012 would give me enough time to earn status for real.... haha

but w/e being a PLAT is a drug for me... watching all these exec looking people in the elevator get off on the 3rd of 4th floor while i go up to my 'standard suite or better' is how i get high now.. so i guess the structure of the challenge is fine with me

If someone earns status in 2012 - they keep for the year earned and the next year. So expiration should be 2014. If they are downgraded or given it under other circumstances it would be different. The expiration date would be 2013 in those incidences.
