I am trying to book an award to OZ/NZ and am looking to traverse Asia on the way. Would this price as two separate awards given I will be touching another "zone?" TIA!

Are you flying US to Australia? You can't traverse Asia on a partner award to Australia. You might look at a One World award which is mileage based and involves at least two partners if you're looking for a stop in Asia.

Here is the breakdown of costs for the OneWorld distance based awards: http://www.aa.com/i18n/disclaimers/oneworld_awards.jsp

As the others said they are good values.

You could do US-Asia on JL, then Asia-Aus on Cathay, then QF back to USA

The only other thing that is not so obvious about these awards is that once you lock them in and ticket them you can't change routing, but can change dates and class of service.
