Past 4 out of 5 stays at different properties, the front desk staff have asked to see me AAA card while checking in.

After decades of only being asked for my AAA card not even a handfull of times (no matter the chain), it would seem Marriott has trained their front desk staff to ask to see AAA card.

I don't even know if AAA ever sent me a card. I think you have to print some flimsy thing off their website nowadays.

I printed mine the other day and it is only good for 30 days so you will need to reprint every month.

Odd. I definitely have a plastic card and every year they send a new one before the old has expired and before I've even paid for renewal. I've got a ton of the things sitting around.

Same here, but different states may have different rules. My AAA is the NorCal and Nevada AAA.

They can give you a lighter plastic temporary one @ the AAA office, & then will send you the replacement card!;)

Same here too. As most hotel chain wants your membership # at booking, I've just forked out the 56 dollars a year the last few years, totally worth it even if I never run out of gas :p

My local AAA club used to just send a new year sticker with the bill, but now they send new cards before we pay the renewal.

I pull the card out at check in as a bit of a reminder that they should check.

Nothing wrong with being asked to show your card.

Can anyone else report a similar dramatic change in frequency of checking? I have yet to have been asked once, including recent stays, and haven't noticed a spike in reporting from others being required to show their card (it is reported on forums every once in a while, but seems to be rare). Of course, it's Marriott's prerogative to check (they'd probably be wise to encourage staff to do so), but I'd like to know if perhaps you're experience is a rather isolated event (perhaps because your account was flagged or something similar).

At one of the Dulles area Marriotts AAA cards are required. I've not been asked anywhere else.

It is standard practice in Asia - especially China, for the front desk to ask to see the card. I was refused the rate in Hong Kong because I didn't have my card with me. They are a sticker for rules in China.

I haven't experienced it in the US, but I have in London & in Prague. I'm so used to hotels not asking to see the card that I left it at home when I was in London. The hotel granted a 'one-time exception' because I said I was so used to not being asked for it that I didn't think to bring it. I think that being Platinum helped w/ that. In Prague, not only did they want to see the card but they insisted for accounting reasons that they had to make a xerox of it & tried to say that it was Marriott policy. Obviously it's not Marriott policy. Got into a bit of an argument with them on that one.

    Cheers.

If that happened to me, I'd tell them it's not policy, suggest they check with Corporate, and that if they charge me otherwise I will charge back. You can always rely on Corporate to straighten out such inaccuracies if needed. Similar advice in the case where a property won't run your Gift Card quickly (wants you to wait around) or correctly... I'd just leave them a xerox of the card info and tell them to charge appropriately when they have time.

Wow. I have stayed at Marriott about 10 nights in the past year and never was I asked to see the AAA card. I do have it on me, but was never asked.

Granted, I mostly stayed at Fairfields, Courtyards, and Residence Inn.

Incidentally, IHG doesn't seem to be enforcing this (yet). I had two stays last week at different properties booked under AAA and I was never asked.

As a backup I have the AAA mobile app now though, since I don't think I ever received a physical card :)

Perhaps I need to restate that this seems to be a regional thing for me. Just had 3 stays (2 OH & 1 IN) no AAA check, but just had 2 more in Chicago area & they did indeed check to see if I had AAA card. We'll see how Milwaukee is next weekend.

I had three stays at Kimpton last week in Seattle and they did not ask for my card.

Domestically, regardless of hotel chain, I get asked at most 1 in 10 times.
