We're headed off to Munich in a couple of weeks to pick up our new ride at the BMW Welt. We booked AA/BA as they had a very low business class fare ($1100 less than Lufthansa WITH the BMW discount). Our itinerary has us flying AA JFK-LHR, then BA from LHR to MUC. The return has us on BA FRA-LHR, then back on AA LHR-JFK.

We are allowing approximately 2 and a half hours between flights each way...is that enough? Also would we have to go through security again at LHR or is there a connection between terminals 3 and 5?

    Thanks in advance....

From my previous experience at LHR 2,5 hours would be enough. And there's a security checkpoint at T5. I can't remember if there's one at T3, but most likely there is.

So there is no transit between 3 and 5 totally within security?

You take an airside, interterminal bus. Upon disembarking at T3 (or T5), follow the transfer signs and arrows/lines on the floors (IIRC, they are purple colored).

When you get to either T3 or T5, you will have to pass through security again. At T5, there is also a passport check, but not at T3.

Have you been there before? If not, I have some photos starting HERE from my visit last year.

You can also walk over to the pool where Mark Spitz won 7 Olympic Gold medals in 1972.

So far the itinerary is Munich-Salzburg-Bregenz-Strasbourg-Heidelberg- Rothenburg-Frankfurt. All a driving adventure. We have only an hour and a half connection time in London for the return, however, going from BA to AA.

You will be fine. I've done several AA / BA transfers at LHR. Very simple. Super fast security with Business Class pass.

The only (late) note is that often AA gates way the blazes out at T3 - seems like you're hiking from Windsor, so take that into account when schlepping to/from the flight connections centre (FCC) at T3.

On the way home, I'd use the BA lounge at T3 instead of the Admirals Club - very close to each other. Again, watch your time relative to the T3 hike.

Thanks, will do. I think it's a holiday in the UK as well--May 5th. That should add some interest to it.

Well we made it, although one of our bags did not. AA had a weight and balance issue which delayed the originating flight by over 1 hour. Yet even with 85 minutes actual connecting time one bag missed. The walk was also very long, both to and from the connection bus.
At least BA texted me that I'd be short a bag, and the bag services desk was very helpful. The bag was at our hotel by the time we finished dinner. So kudos to BA.
Btw, does anyone know how long it takes for BA flights to credit to AA?

Home safe and sound, made it WITH bags on the return, one thing I can say is we love Global Entry!!!!!
Transiting from Term 5 to Term 3 is still a pain, but we caught the bus just as it pulled up, and went to the Admirals Club. Be aware it's quite a walk from the club to the gates used by AA....and mid afternoon meant little if any security lines reclearing in Term 3.

Yeah, it's always a hike from the club to the AA gates. Glad you had an easy trip! Global Entry is, in fact, awesome. :)
