I could be blind -- but I don't see this announcing a date or anything. Why do you say it will happen sooner rather than later? Hasn't this been in the works for some time?

I assume the device will be subject to the same operational restrictions as any other electronic device (i.e., if it has an on/off switch, it must be turned off for take-off and landing) ... or (by some stroke of luck and sanity) has it actually be certificated to be operable at any time?

I would imagine, like anything else AA hands out, it'll be handed out after take-off, and collected way too soon before landing. ;)

AA posted this on FB (emphasis mine):
ETA: Although the page on aa.com [still?] says "...tablet will be offered beginning later this year on our premium cabins..." so I suppose YMMV

I wonder how long will it take before we read of an incident regarding an Emmy award winning passenger, flying LAX to JFK in premium class, who decides to view an entire episode of 30 Rock, while ensconced in the comfort and privacy of the first cabin American Airlines lavatory using their Samsung Galaxy Tab™ 10.1 Android platform tablet.

Ah, there you go. I refuse to use Facebook and only read the link on AA.

And now, interestingly, the link on AA no longer works! Maybe they're updating it.

Good point, and I thought about that, too, but since it was posted to AA's facebook page today and AA is in the processing of upgrading the "premium experience" right now, I am presuming that it is referring to "this year" for select flights (JFK-LHR) and full implementation in 2012. I'm in South America; believe me, I've learned not to hold my breath for anything "new."

Sheesh. Maybe I should set up a dummy FB account to keep up with AA. ;)

    Thanks for posting!

I've been going through AA's site, and it seems like there are bunch of new things out there all of a sudden, like the in-flight movie rental, now the Galaxy tablet...I haven't flown AA metal since March, but even so it seems like there are a lot of new features being introduced quickly. Am I out of it, or do you agree?

I have a blog post up about this. I work for an MDM vendor - MobileIron - so this is near and dear to my heart. I have significant privacy concerns about this, depending on what system they're using to secure these and how effectively they've used the available tools to lock the devices down and refresh them between use. Obviously I'm partial to my company, but the blog post is a discussion, not a sales pitch... and not partial to any particular product for securing mobile devices.

zpaul, I agree with you. I think that JonNYC had noted over on Traveling Better that we might see things that were "in the pipeline" speed up a bit for AA now that they've declared bankruptcy -- to keep people interested in traveling with them.

Mike Reed -- interesting. I've been of the mind that the tablets were going to be locked down so they're for movies/music/etc. only, not for web use. Certainly on the routes that I'd be most likely to use them -- international -- they couldn't be used for internet access.

I don't know about that. The recent press release on the international 767-300ER's stated they'd have WiFi service on these international flights.

Eh, I'm pretty myopic. I'm thinking of my travel booked on AA through May next year. :D

Mike, I totally agree. I hope they have a plan for this.

International in-flight Wi-Fi is currently available. Row 44 Inc. offers in-flight international broadband internet services. I would love to have global broadband internet service on American Airlines.

The longer I can go without being tied to my email in the air, the better, especially since my company has already stated that they have determined the price to be "reasonable" for reimbursement. I, for one, am not an advocate for this, but I know it's coming.

If it tethers you to work, I agree, that kind of sucks. On the other hand, for those of us traveling on our own dime(s), it's a nice alternative to the in-flight entertainment. :)

Perhaps very soon. AA's recent 777 update did note it will include international wifi.
