    Seems to be working fine now. I just created an itinerary and put it on 24-hour hold. No problem.

    The last time this happened while I was mid-booking I ended up with two identical reservations... two seats, same name, same flight, same day. Only one showed up in my "My Trips" folder, so I didn't notice this was a problem until I looked at my credit card statement. I called in and AA saw what I explained above, then promptly corrected the situation without any fuss or muss - canceled the duplicate reservation and issued a refund - but you might want to keep an eye out for a few weeks just to be sure.
