aa.com = $463, ba.com = £79 ($123), WTF?

    Searching for flights ABZ to LHR next May and thought I would take advantage of the $150 credit from my new Citi AA cards on purchases on aa.com. But when I search the flight on aa.com it costs $463, while on ba.com it costs £79 (~$123). :eek:

    I've never seen such disparate prices before on airline sites. Is this normal? The other sites (expedia/travelocity, etc.) all have prices similar to ba.com.

    I see this on DL/KL/AF too - it comes down which fare bucks the individual carrier has available for sale that are released by the operating carrier. I often buy tickets on BA, KL, or AF websites due to this.

    Are these for the AA codeshare or for BA coded flights?

    A check on aa.com shows the fare the OP quoted on BA (not a code share) to be same for a fully refundable business class ticket.
    Must be some sort of glitch.

    Not the kind of 'mistake fare' I had hoped for. :)

    In this instance, I'd just book on ba.com...even with the foreign transaction fee, it's still cheaper. I've had this happen in the past...even when flying AA metal; I was very happy to upgrade the flight on this ticket using miles and money! ;)

    Since BA flights post to AA in full with no restrictions, not a bad idea. It doesn't help the OP with his desire to use the $150 credit on the AA credit card though. :(

    Right...if a credit factored in, I'd look at other flights it could be used for! :)

    Many years ago, it was possible to purchase all BA fares through any AA sales channel. Often, AA would abstain from collecting BA-mandated fuel surcharges, and fares would be cheaper if purchased at an AA ticket counter (or on AA.com). At some point, BA decided to put an end to this by adding a restriction to many of their discounted fares, requiring that they be issued on BA stock only. This was a sad day.

    Anyway, as Online Travel Agencies are able to issue tickets on the stock of individual operating carriers, despite this restriction, they are still able to offer the same discounted fares as are available directly from BA. However, tickets sold by AA.com are always issued on AA stock; and accordingly, these discounted BA fares are unavailable through that channel. As far as I know, this is why BA fares are sold on AA.com are so comparatively expensive.

    Well that stinks! We are flying 5 of us back from ABZ-LHR-___-DCA on miles and flying the whole way costs $200+ per ticket more than just flying LHR-___-DCA, so I figured it would be cheaper to just buy the $130-ish tickets ABZ-LHR and I could get at least 2 (and probably all 5) free using Citi AA cards. Guess we need to move on to plan B. Thanks for the info!

    Why not? It is clearly very flat and suitable for aircraft of any kind.

    In fact, I think my luggage ended up there once. ;)

    You just have to be careful with IB because the cheapo fares do not earn 100% EQM on AA! :)

    Couple of factors as mentioned. Each codeshare partner will have a certain number of seats within each fare sub-category and thus AA had only higher fares available. Also, if the flight showed with an AA number it will be more expensive than if it shows as a BA flight number because discounted fares earn fewer miles with BA numbers vs full mileage if AA numbers...even on the same flight.
