AA chooses A319 and A321 for it's initial Airbus order

    I found it interesting that they picked engines from two different manufacturers for the two Airbus models. Can anyone shed some light on this?

    Maybe it's the same reason they split the aircraft order: to get the engines more quickly.

    Scratching my head with this order. They are taking 130 of the version that's obsolete? Also, the 321 doesn't have the range to do the routes the 767-200 does today and many of the 757 routes.

    The way they probably see it... they are taking 130 of the version that they can get now (vs far in the future).

    And +1 on the range comment, but I am certainly not an expert on AA's routes and their route/fleet planning etc.

    Their 738's use a variant of the CFM56-5B that they picked for the A319. Why they wouldn't also go with the CFM for the A321s, I don't know.
