Just got an email from AA that they have changed my itinerary [EWR-DFW-PHX]. At time of booking, the original arrival time was 12:00 NOON. New itinerary has an arrival time of 4:15PM, which simply does not work with our travel plans, so I need to rebook [or cancel and fly direct on UA].

Q: will American hit me up with change fees, even if the schedule change is their doing?

    From their website (AA.com):

    • Washington Reagan Nat'l, DC (DCA)
    • Baltimore, MD (BWI)
    • Newark, NJ (EWR)
    • New York Kennedy, NY (JFK)
    • Westchester County / White Plains, NY (HPN)
    • Philadelphia, PA (PHL)
    • New York LaGuardia, NY (LGA)
    On the following dates: December 8 - 9, 2013
And your ticket was issued no later than: December 8, 2013
    You may travel: December 8 - 13, 2013
    Original inventory required? Yes

The ticket reissue charge will be waived for one ticket change.

I should have been more specific, these are not for today and thus not weather affected!
    Flights are in April.

Ah okay, well I've had them change my future flights before and send me that dreaded email. If the change they made is inconvenient, I call them and see what my options are. I have had my flights adjusted before without a fee since the change was initiated by them, but I'm not sure if it depends on who answers the phone. Give them a call, and good luck getting it sorted out.

DOT rules say that at worst, you're entitled to s full refund without fees after a significant schedule change. Significant isn't difined, although it might be in the airline's CoC, but the norm seems to be around ninety minutes or two hours. In this case, AA should work with you to get rebooked on flights that do work for you at no additional fee.

Heck, with the merger, you should be able to get a non-stop EWR-PHX (or JFK-PHX) on US!

They will refund your money if you call them. I have never had a problem with AA doing that for even shorter changes.

All good - they refunded all miles and fees, no questions asked.
