This is cheaper than DL coach M class, the cheapest fare that can be upgraded with miles or SWUs which was about $4400 the last time I checked for RTs to HKG.

I see it on Expedia and Travelocity for Aug 3-9 for HKG -> LAX. I'm going to pass, it seems to be refundable but I don't know enough to be 100% sure.

Expedia has a 24h fee free cancellation policy on most airlines (including CX). I just took the plunge and bought 2 HKG-LAX tickets.

Thanks, can you or someone else answer my fare rule questions so I know next time? I asked over at FT and probalby will not get an answer - can I tell that the ticket is refundable via AA from the following fare rule statement?
    Code:
    RT-FIRST CLASS UNRESTRICTED
    or
    Code:
    33.VOLUNTARY REFUNDS
       NO VOLUNTARY REFUNDS DATA FOUND.

11:18pm and I'm still seeing this on Expedia. Only seems to work from HKG. In the $3k's to LAX or JFK R/T on AA operated by CX. These are $16k in the opposite direction.

It's interesting that according to CNN, CX and AA announced an expanded codeshare arrangement today. One wonders about communication between AA and CX regarding the sale of so many tickets at this fare.

I am booked on the 27th, so am expecting a call in the next couple of days. Will post an update once I hear from AA.

AA seems to be changing its stance every few hours per the FT thread. Anyone else in here receive calls from them?

I still haven't gotten a call so I'm planning on flying it and my others as originally intended. I did book a backup award ticket though, just in case.

Spoke to AA yesterday and the supervisor on the line was pretty adamant that CX wouldnt let me on the plane and that AA was contacting passengers in advance to avoid that eventuality. I have HKG-LAX booked and they offered HKG-PVG-LAX as an alternative in CX J and AA F, but that really isnt acceptable to me. I ended up filing a complaint with the DOT and am now weighing my options.

    Latest Salvo from AA

    -------------------------------------

Due to an inadvertent coding error for a brief time on July 12 and 13, your recent purchase of First Class travel between the Hong Kong and the U.S. was priced at the Economy Class fare. This service is marketed by American Airlines with an AA* flight number and is operated by our codeshare partner Cathay Pacific.
We sincerely regret our error, but you will not be able to travel in First or Business Class on Cathay Pacific using the ticket you purchased at the Coach fare. However, in order to provide you with alternative arrangements to best accommodate your travel needs, we are offering you the travel options listed below, which apply to your own ticket(s) plus any traveling companions in the same booking record.

    1. You may be re-routed between Hong Kong and the U.S. via Tokyo/Shanghai, with travel in Business Class on Cathay Pacific between Tokyo/Shanghai and Hong Kong and in First Class on American Airlines between Tokyo/Shanghai and the U.S. at no additional charge.
    2. You may travel in Economy Class on Cathay Pacific’s Hong Kong – U.S. flights on the date(s) you are ticketed at the price you paid.
    3. You may cancel your itinerary for a full refund to the credit card you used to purchase the ticket(s).

We will also reimburse customers who mail in receipts showing travel-related expenses incurred from reliance on the erroneous fare, such as fees for canceling other flights, hotels, and rental cars. To do this, log on to www.AA.com/customerrelations for information on how to write to Customer Relations.

We have presented our offer to the Aviation Enforcement Office at the U.S. Department of Transportation. The offer has been reviewed by DOT’s enforcement staff and is in line with the agency’s acceptance of past responses by other carriers that have made pricing errors.
While you may have previously understood from American Airlines or Cathay Pacific that your ticket would be honored in the First or Business Class cabin, this email supersedes any prior discussions.
Please contact American Airlines at 800-736-6344 if calling from the U.S. for calls in the U.S. If calling from outside the U.S, contact an AT&T operator to be connected to the 800 number. When you reach one of our agents, make reference to your six character AA Record Locator(s).
If we do not hear from you with your preferred option by Monday, August 1, we will cancel your itinerary and refund the ticket price to your credit card.
Again, we regret this fare filing error, and appreciate your understanding to help us best accommodate you and meet your travel needs on American Airlines.

    Sincerely,
    B. J. Russell
    Customer Relations
    American Airlines

Indeed! Wish I had the luxury of putting things off until later but outbound is on the 27th! Will have to decide this weekend. Not cool, AA!

PS: No thumbs down icon here?

Though the difference from CX to AA is not trivial, they are still offering to honor a great price for F travel from HKG.

For those hoping for some supplemental vouchers, I guess that plan is shot.

I have to agree. Kind of a bummer that it won't be CX, but it's still $3K for a paid F fare to HKG that should earn EQM bonuses. And doesn't routing through PVG give you an extra RDM bonus?
