Despite flying to London several times a year for the last few years, I have never had the opportunity to fly in a premium cabin. Thanks to someone's expiring system-wide upgrade turning into my grand prize, I just had to wait for the upgrades to clear.

The first upgrade cleared for first class from New Orleans to Dallas (MSY-DFW), and 100 hours out the Dallas to London (DFW-LHR) flight cleared for business class. I was beside myself with excitement to finally try the lie-flat beds and reportedly good food. Even better was the opportunity to fly the new 77W in the American fleet. The last few times I flew to London and was supposed to be in the new plane, weather or cancellations rerouted me to the old birds. Luckily there were no issues with this trip, and I was able to finally fly the new bird.

Congrats, and great trip report along with all the pix. Enjoyed reading all the details and captions, and it really looked like a good trip. Way to go! (And I was getting hungry with the food pictures and the later serve yourself snack offerings).

Only suggestion I have is now you'll have to change the heading of your page with the TR, as you no longer can say "Adventures in STEERAGE".

Ha, this was a one-off. I'll be back to steerage soon enough. :p

Thought you were in J on the older B777 on the way back. And since you just might get to like J or even F, you may as well change the heading in anticipation of the expected. ;)

The J is wait-listed on the return, so it's not guaranteed.

If you think optimistically and hard enough, and concentrate on the upgrade.....!

Looking forward to your J class TR for the return trip.

I also tried crossing my fingers hoping that MSYgirl's upgraded return comes through. Didn't work for me though. Can you tell that I'm now typing this with my big toe?

Congrats! It's great to see good things happen to good people! Well deserved (from a fellow steerage-class long-haul flyer)!

You are aware, if it does clear from LHR, that there will be a charge of around $100?

The fee was paid at the time of SWU application. Because my DFW-MSY already cleared to first class, they said they can charge it if any portion of the return clears. So I could end up not getting the J seat on the departure LHR-DFW portion and will have still paid the fee because of the first class DFW-MSY (which is such a waste on a one-hour flight). :(

tom911, are you saying that it's not worth $100 for a FC upgrade from LHR to the US? ;)

The cheapest I was ever offered to upgrade was $500 at the kiosk for LHR-DFW, so $115-ish is a bargain (if I get it, that is). $115 for a DFW-MSY upgrade would be a ripoff.

Amen, MSYgirl! It's a no-brainer deal, and especially so for us "steerage class" folks.

No, just didn't want the poster to be surprised when they asked for a credit card on check-in. I've seen some posts over the years from others that were unaware of the extra tax collection. It appears to be a business class upgrade on the international segment in this case.

Agree, and $100 is a small price to pay for premium long-haul seating! BTW, have very much enjoyed your travel posts! :)
