Link to the story says mechanical issues, and computer problems.

I'm guessing if the mechanics [and AAcountants] think the cost is too much to fix the plane, she'll be the next MD-80 to retire...

They can't leave it parked to rust at TUL. AA would need to make it at least airworthy enough for pilots to fly to the airplane graveyard in the southwest or sufficiently acceptable to whoever (DL) buys the beast. AFAIK it would be prohibitively expensive to disassemble it at the TUL airport and ship it to a junkyard in pieces.

Fully aware they can't leave it to rust at TUL--- my avatar is a pic from a former hotel that literally is next to the airport parking lot at TUL-- I know a thing or two about the surroundings at TUL. ;)

They could drag the bird across the tarmac to donate or sell to Spartan College of Aeronautics [located at TUL].

I mean why not get a corporate tax write-off or a few bucks from Spartan, versus having to pay AA maintenance to disassemble it, or fix it to make it airworthy to ship it to the bone yard?
