Lufthansa has made a pretty great fanfare about the launch of A380 service between FRA-JFK starting on Feb 28, with a big twitter campaign.
I heard today that Lufthansa has downgraded the flights and will only operate the A380 on Feb 28 and March 11. There could be a lot of unhappy pax who booked the A380.

Looks like that's true...the timetable for next week isn't particularly promising:

Also of note is that it appears LH404 - the later flight normally operated by a 744 - doesn't operate on Monday when the 388 is flying.

The following week also has the 388 only once, though the 744 operates 7 days:

And the next few weeks don't have the 388 on them at all. The timetable switches to "EQV" the first week of April and the 388 the following week. Assuming no additional adjustments.

Could this be a cost-containment measure by LH due to higher oil prices at times when it is more cost efficient to fly a plane with a smaller payload capacity since the planes might not be anywhere close to full, or some maintenance-related change?

  4. It probably a combination of all of these.
There are no accurate per seat costs in the public domain, so its hard to really compare aircraft effectively.
My long guess is that LH is using the A380 on new or different routing like LH 455 LH 454. Apparently, LH increased their A380 service to JNB recently as well.

I think a combination of factors played into this decision-between the jump in fuel costs, and potential growing pains with the 380's, it probably made sense to adjust the schedule as they have.

That said, it was supposed to go daily by end of March--guess we'll just wait and see if it happens at all at this point.

I have a friend who won their Twitter/FB contest and is in FRA waiting for the first flight on the A380. I asked him to be sure and take some pictures of the event and experience, especially if there was anything special he received as a winner of the contest.

Looks like it doesn't go to daily until mid-April...ouch. I'm hoping SFO service starts (and continues) as announced, I've got a booking for next fall.

I still see it for our Summer travel - I really have no intention of enjoying the same (biz) seats in a much larger (bus-type) cabin, and the 744 is fine for me! [IMG]

LH Daily A380 to JFK was scheduled from 12APR11 when it announced the service in January 2011. This hasn't been changed anyways

This is certainly not a peak travel period and it would be a waste of LH's resources to fly the 380 every day and not be able to fill it. Summer loads are about the only rationale for flying this plane on most routes, as can be seen from the SFO and LAX schedules for the next couple of planes LH gets. Suspect this soft launch into JFK serves more as a way of testing out facilities, ground handling issues on the tarmac and in the terminal, and not a big marketing push since the 380 can only be filled by cancelling one of the other JFK-FRA flights. It's a pretty good bet that LH will keep it on for the STARMegaDo3 in early September, but it might get iffy after Labour Day when peak tourist/vacation travel drops off!

If LH will acceptance sixth or seventh A380 is delivered. The newest registrations number is D-AIMF/G. I let you know if I hear anything more new info from A380 productions. I will keep informed for you.

Today LH 404 is the A380, there are some changes because of the NRT route.

I can imagine the NRT route is probably throwing a "spanner in the works" for more than one airline at the moment.
