Curious what the availability looks like over time for Delta SkyMiles redemption on various routes? Yeah, me too. So I did something about it. Cherry picking routes right now (JFK-LAX, JFK-LHR, LGA-ORD) because the data processing isn't easy but the information I've gathered so far is interesting.

There are 216 days of the next 330 where a "low" business class seat is available; 50 are on DL metal and 215 on VS metal. More similar analysis after the click. :)

Any other city pairs you're interested in??

I think it would be interesting to look at a route that they compete with AS on.

    ATL-SEA

Even with the competition not a lot of cheap award seats to be had. Seems there's enough paying traffic to keep those fares (revenue or award) higher.

I'll look at routes with a bit more frequency from both carriers soon but this is one I already had running.

    @Wandering Aramean.
Nice. There are few bloggers out there who actually creates data rather then just provide opinion pieces on hot topics or current issues.
You are certainly one of those who are the real deal.
Thanks for all the efforts and sharing.

Judging by the format of your data, you are not really presenting "availability over time". I'm guessing it's "availability at this instant" for possible future travel dates, correct?
I would be very interested in actual fluctuations of availability over time. It would also be interesting to look at more representative routes (i.e. not just between the hubs with highest competition).
    But thanks for posting this.

Me, too. But I've gotta start somewhere. As I get more data I'll compile better stats.

I'd be interested to see MSP-NRT and MSP-SIN (which on DL metal would require a connection through NRT). This would illustrate married segment logic for international travel, especially if NRT-SIN is also examined separately.

Someone elsewhere requested LAX-SYD SkyMiles comparisons. Have a gander at this:

If you're willing to connect the numbers get better. If you insist on premium cabin DL metal and lowest level awards you can expect to be sitting at home.

Some more details on the blog but this is the big picture stuff.

That's only because most people who are actually good at data visualization don't care so much about FF programs. ;)

This is VERY niche market stuff, for better or worse.

Nonsense... there are six million travel blogs out there and all they care about is that their CC affiliate links are working. :)

Wow, not a single low award business class DL ticket to SYD for the entire period, although you do see some aavailability on the VA flight for DL miles.

And even those of us who do have an overlap between the two don't have the time to deal with scraping the data and building out a viz for free.

So thank you as always for doing a service to the community that we get to consume basically for free.

There can be no surprise for experienced DL flyers. sbm's visualization provides a compact summary of what we all know. This, in particular the LAX-SYD nonavailability, is:
